Getting bored waiting for paint to cure on my other guitar so began working on the next one.
So hoping to learn the following in this build
- Dealing with bindings
- Staining wood
- Proper sanding
- Using oil or shellac to finish
- Noob level engraving
So Adam sent me this Les Paul with Spalted Maple top. I was initially going to paint the whole thing white but then I noticed the pattern on the maple had a fire like pattern.
So decided I wanted to try staining it.
After a closer look I was pretty excited to find that as a bonus the maple was also flamed or tiger stripped.
So flamed + spalted = Awwwessome.
Went to hardware store and bought wood stain. Half way through I changed my mind from a black to go red.
Sanded down the guitar fairly thoroughly. There were scuff marks and prior sanding against the grain (mainly around the edges).
The body being made from 4 different pieces of wood made it extra hard as had to deal with divergent grains but the 3 distinct shade shades will be great when stained
Palm sander chipped a bit off the inner volume knob cavity as I wasn't being careful, sooo lucky that's a part that's going to be covered up. Won't be doing that again
I'm pretty exhausted after 3 hours of hand sanding
I also tested the wood stain on a test piece of pine. Which was fortunate because the colour was way too earth red tone. I wanted a bright vivid red and this isn't going to cut it.
Ordered some aniline dye from the US. Going to be a few weeks before I can continue.
