Thread: First Build - TL-1A

Well the good news is that sound comes out. And the sounds that do come out are pretty good.

What's puzzling me is that one of the three switch positions is completely silent which would suggest that something has come loose (I'm guessing). So I'll have to take a look at the wires and see what's going on.

Edit: Further testing would suggest my neck pickup wire has come loose.

Edit 2: Earth wire. More soldering for me.

... and here it is. Yes, alignment of the pick guard is a bit wonky but other than that I'm really happy.

Well that didn't do much. Still no neck pick-up. Wiring looks correct now. Might be time to borrow a multimeter.

Post a couple clear photos of the wiring (just flip the control plate over). Maybe we can diagnose it.

    What position is not working?

The neck end position. I can hear some electrical buzz if I crank volume but no sound from the pick-up. Other two positions work. Bridge position sounds good.

I'll try and get some clear photos.

When you have it in the middle position (bridge + neck combined) tap the neck pickup with something made of steel (most people use a screwdriver) and see if you have sound. You may actually only be getting sound from the bridge pickup in position 2.

If you get sound (like clicking) from the screwdriver, from both pickups in position 2, then the problem may be at the switch, not the pickup itself.

It's at least one thing to rule out, where to look next.

Seems like the day for it. If you want to feel better, you're doing better than me.

Yep. Electrical gremlins. Joy. Not sure if having slightly less serious problems than you is going to help me feel much better.

I'm sure we'll both work through our respective issues. Eventually.

Got mine sorted. I created new problems by troubleshooting the original problem. I think I need a third set of glasses just for soldering because everything is blurry when I solder and the fading light wasn't helping. This getting old thing is getting old.

Great to hear you've solved your issue. I've parked it for tonight. Will have to get back to it in a few days.

For some reason I just can't solder with glasses, even though I use them for almost everything else. Just can't seem to focus. Of course, it doesn't help that I have a very limited idea of what the hell I'm doing.
