I'd email Adam and ask him to send you one. Replacement 5-string nuts aren't easy to find. I had a look recently for a bone 5-string nut for a bass of mine and ended up buying a blank to make one from.

You could measure the width of the neck at the nut and search the web for a suitable 5 string replacement nut. I'd go for bone or a bone substitute, not just cheap plastic (which is what should have been on there). Not a Fender style one that's got square edges all round, but one with a rounded edge to it. Graphtec do some replacement Tusq nuts for 5 string basses, but you do need to get one of a suitable width and height and depth. If it's a bit too deep or too high you can sand it down, but you certainly need it the right width, or no more than 1mm over, otherwise the nut slots will be in the wrong place. https://graphtech.com/collections/tusq-nuts-bass The PQ-1412-00 is the shape you need but I have no idea if its dimensions are correct.

But you may have to get a blank and cut the slots and do some final shaping yourself. But it does help to have the original to copy from. You just stick it in place with some PVA or Titebond wood glue. If you fit the stings loosely, slip the nut under that after gluing the edges that will touch the wood, and then tighten the strings up a bit, then the string pressure will hold it in place. Leave it to dry for 24 hours before doing anything else.

You can cut a bass nut just using needle files. I generally use a round one and just use the tip to get an appropriate diameter slot. You can use a small thin bladed saw to help start cutting the nut slots to get the slot centres in the right place.

Simon to the rescue once again. You are indeed a gentleman.
Once again, I will heed your advice. Guess there is nothing much for me to do apart from wait until the morning.
I have to laugh haha. I thought I was going to finish it off tonight. Murphy's Law huh.
I will send a request to Adam and ask him if I can pay for express postage as they are on the other side of Australia and its a big island.

    - Do you by any chance know how much higher than the fretboard it needs to sit? Should I loosely base in on my other guitars or is the bass completely different? It seems to be fatter (deeper?).
    - If I do get a blank, how far apart do I file the nut slots? Just even spacing?

Thank you again, it is much appreciated.

PS: Is Adam contactable through this email?
    service@pitbullguitars.com?
Or is there a better one that will find him quicker?

I think you should be fine with that email address - Ben will look after you.

Alternative is something like this: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Genuine-...kAAOSwvL1b~zxH

Bone will be a better outcome than a resin (plastic) nut that comes with the kit.

The main considerations are the nut width, the depth of the nut (so that it fills the flat space at the end of the neck) and the height of the bottom of the string slots from the fretboard. You could have a very tall nut, but you don't want the nut slots to be too far off the fretboard; just enough so that the strings don't buzz on the first or second frets. You also don't want the nut to be too tall either. I prefer the nut to be no higher than the top of each string as it sits in its slot, but some people prefer up to 1/2 the string to be visible. On a bass, if you aren't bending strings, then the nut height above the bottom of the spots can be 1/2 the string height. Just file it down, then sand and polish to your taste.

The slots create a weakness in the nut, and the two outer ends of the nut, if too high, if knocked or caught on clothing and pulled, are liable to break off. The higher the nut is above the slot, the more leverage there is and the more likelihood of the end snapping off. Also, the lower the nut height is, the less likely it is to catch in the first place!

So anyways, I am not having much luck with the strings for some reason. The scale length is 34", but I need a minimum of 39" bll-end to taper, as the strings feed through the body and I lose approx. 50-60mm in length. I have tried 2 different brands (Roto long scale and Pitbull standard), and none fit. I have ordered another set which will hopefully arrive in the next day or so. I think they should be OK. If not, I have no idea what to do. I am confused as to why the Pitbull standard strings do not fit. Does anyone else have the DHB-5 and if so, did they have the same problems? What was the get-around-fix?

While I have nothing else to do, I decided to file and polish the frets. I was hesitant and had been putting it off for a while, but once I started, I realised it was easier than I had thought and really enjoyed it. The night was productive and here are the results:
    1. Taped up the fretboard and used Sharpie to mark the frets. Am loving the blue tape!

    2. Used 600 grit sandpaper to find high points. Mostly good, with a few spots easily sanded down.

    3. Used my needle file (triangle) in a twisting motion to crown the flat tops. Got the knack of it quickly. Didn't push too hard, and could tell which parts needed work as the file tended to bite into them.

    4. Polished with 800, 1000, 1200, 2500 sandpaper, then brought out the polishing papers which go up to 8000 grit. Removed tape and gave the timber fretboard a good once over with a beeswax polish. Ooohh so shiny! Come on strings, please hurry up and arrive!!
