    St- 1l

We got given the above as a gift and I am not sure where to start. Should we paint it first after the test build? We have sanded the neck to fit and now not sure where we go from here. I have hopefully attached photos of where we are at. Thank you.

First is to always do a mock build to see if all components are fitting and if you are good to go. Also you need to string up high E and Low E string to see if the neck is aligned properly and also that the scale length is set right for your build

Sorry for the silly question but how do I that? Which strings are high and low E? And how do I know what the guitar looks like completed?

I know nothing about guitars - I am going to have lots of silly questions.

1st and 6th strings are high and low E. You need to string us as in below picture

To see if they are equal spaced from ends of fret board. Also scale length is measured from inside of nut to top of saddle. It needs to be perfect for guitar to have proper intonation.

You can visit my guitar build diary at

To gather more info on basics as I am also a newbie and I had a lot of similar questions

That gap is normal U can push up the Jack cover a bit up

Thank you. This is very helpful. Another dumb question - how do I get the strings to attach to the top notch things and the bottom thing (I am sure they have names rather than thingys).

Not a dumb question. However, you might want to take a look at this site so that you can be a bit more specific about the guitar part you are referring to ;-)

You can't attach the strings to the "headstock tuners" till you have the "bridge in", that's why it's critical to make sure the bridge is in the correct position firstly. Tape over the body so to be able to make your measurements and pencil mark without marking the body. As said, go to the how to section and have a good look at the video's Utube also have plenty of "how to's" to check on. Good luck.
