Thanks for this, I'm learning so much. I'd not considered applying finishes etc before attaching the neck. Is there a definite advantage? In my mind at least, I'm thinking that getting a good even match with neck on would be easier but now not so sure

The main advantage is its much easier to apply coats. It wasn't difficult to get them even steven at all.

Just dont stain the neck heel there the glue will be so you need to mark that clearly before staining.
