I'm excited. Another year, another project!

Next up a JB-4M. Ready for pick up at AusPost (thanks for the quick turnaround PBG!)

I needed something a bit easier weight-wise on my back than my previous JBA-4 fretless build (its now my sit down playing bass)

This bass will (suffer?) my first attempt at an acrylic spray finish. Usual upgrades (DB bone nut, pups, electronics, tuners, bridge etc. etc.)

And I have tomorrow off work so lift off commences then!

Happy days! I wouldn't fear the acrylic finish process - I went through a batch of the threads here about how to do it and it made the process much easier than I thought it would be. Looking forward to following your build!

good stuff Ponch, you reckon basswood body will be much lighter than the ash body ? You could always put a big tummy and elbow cut in the lose a bit of weight.

Boring grain, so he can make a big swimming pool route under the pickguard and no one will complain.

It does raise the point that PBG don't really have many lightweight guitar options. Lots of Ash and Basswood that aren't the lightest guitar woods.

good option Fretty, also Ponch could reshape the body a bit and maybe give it a Jag shape. With the swimming pool route and tummy/elbow cuts should lose a bit of weight.
Otherwise get a custom build out of paulownia, I got a paulownia LP and it's featherweight !

Ive got a surfboard build out of paulownia that I'm about halfway through - I'd never thought of using it for a scratch body build! It's great to work with and tougher than I thought it would be given how light it is.

You're welcome to pop over to my place to check the weight difference - my "Bass IV" used that kit, albeit with a few bits chopped off for offset goodness!

Thanks for all the ideas! I'll see how this one pulls out of the box weight wise. Larger belly/arm carve outs may be the go. Also on the hardware side I'm going to avoid using a high mass bridge / large clover tuners and opt for a lighter vintage bridge with brass saddles and some type of lighter machine head

I suspect the weight to some extent will come down to how 'select' the timber is. My 90's Flender P-Bass is Alder body and super fly-weight

Chuck - we are indeed almost living next door to each other! We'll have to catch up at some point and your more than welcome to borrow any tools (from my limited selection) if you need. I've got a good set of fret crowning files etc.

I'll never catch up with you Woks on the posts, I'm almost @ Overlord! Looking forward to my badge I ended up with a TC Electronic BH250 - it was the perfect comprise with sound/size/functionality (& $'s). More than I need and keeps up with my noisy guitar/drum player in practice sessions

How about one of these lol
