Hi KB, thanks for posting, and keeping your finger on the pulse of all things free!
Tried out the RockRack this morning. It sounds very nice and is a good looking piece of kit as well. Unfortunately with the Demo version it appears (with the exception of the output level) that you cannot change any of the settings and are stuck with the presets as they are (Amps, fx chain, EQ, Cab, mic etc.). Not altogether a bad thing as there are 20 odd presets that should get you close to what you are after. But I would love to be able to see what can be done with some knob twirling. But at $199US it way out of my price range, but if I had the money I would certainly like to give it a try.
The other Demo I have is Amplitube. With this Demo there are less Amps, Cabs and Mics to choose from but every thing else is working and tweakable. It makes it a bit easier to get closer to a particular sound you're after, but I fear that upgrading with the near endless selection of Amps, Cabs and Mics, it could/would turn into a money pit. But I really liked their Cab emulation and how easy it is to choose cabs and mics and position those mics (graphically) exactly where you want them. Very nice.
At present I have to load IR's separately into a Cab convolution vst. My directory of IR's is currently about 30,000 files, but will be reduced to just a few hundred with some judicial editing. But at present finding that ONE special one is a real test of patience.
This is all pretty good timing for me as a few months ago I started to get my head around all the free Amps, pedals, and cab simulations out there. It was the first time I have recorded guitars directly into my computer without using any fx pedals and it has been an eye opener as to how good these things are getting. My current arsenal includes free Amps from Ignite, Poulin and Nick Crowe and IR's scoured from all corners of the internet. All of these Amps are in the same league as the commercial ones, but without the convenience of having, Pedals, Amp, Cab and mics in the one vst. But if you are like me and have lots of free time, and patience the results aren't too bad.
I'm just trying to put the final touches to what I hoped would be a quick recording to try them out, but as per usual it has turned into a painstaking endurance event. When I get it finished I'll upload it. But my guitar playing is letting me down quite badly.
cheers
rob
Hey Rob glad you liked it. You know you can try the full working 14 day free demo. Try blending the presets on the player version on the left channel with another preset on the right channel from amplitude. You can get some great sounds. Look forward to your demo.
enthusiasm and love of guitars matters more than technical excellence here just enjoy what you do thanks again.
