Thread: Greetings from California

    Greetings from California

Hi there! I'm Adam from beautiful Orange County, California. I've been bugging Adam the past few days and pulled the trigger on a custom kit that I will try to bend into a Mark Hoppus-esqe Jazz Bass. It looks like I'm going to need to make a custom pickguard, so that looks like it will be an adventure.

This will be my first kit build, but I have experience with refinishing guitars and building/modifying tube amplifiers.

If this kit goes smoothly, I will be investing in one of the MK-2 kits. I have always wanted a Johnny Ramone guitar!

Welcome Adam - make sure you start a build diary so we can watch you progress. I love the fact you're already planning your second build before you start your first - many of us here can relate to that!!
    Completed Builds: #1 TL-1 "Telemaster" (GOTM Oct 2016); #2 The "Maplecaster" scratch build; #3 JB-4 "Bass IV" (co-winner GOTM Jan 2017); #4 ST-1M "Surfcaster" (GOTM Apr 2017), #5 JZA-1 "EC Deluxe"

    In Progress:
    Build #6 N1R "Semi-scratch" build
    Build #7 JZA-1 Baritone

I'm actually working on a few guitars right now until my kit arrives in May! I have an old Japanese Mustang clone body I bought a long time ago (older than both of my kids) that I am prepping for paint. It's been really rainy recently, so it's on hold until it warms up a bit. I picked up a Squier Vintage Modified neck for $50, and I have to say, it's a really nice neck that needed just a touch of fret work. I'm painting it with a blue Ed Roth Rattle Bomb that I picked up locally. A friend also gave me a custom Warmoth Jazzmaster body that I'm going to finish for him as well. I haven't decided on a color for the bass yet, but I think I'm going to go through Guitar Re-Ranch for the paint.

And you don't want to know how many amp projects I have going right now. My newest one is a single-channel Marshall 18watt-type amp with 6CM6 output tubes (basically a 9-pin version of a 6V6) Those tubes are a hidden gem in that circuit.

Welcome Adam! I will watch your bass build with interest. What modifications did you request? Also - good call on the Johnny Ramone guitar. I dont know how anyone here on the forum could be without one.

    cheers,
    Gav.

I'm going to try to make a Mark Hoppus signature bass. Alder J Bass body with a P bass pickup route. I've always liked the J Bass style body, but never liked the pickups (I always seem to hit the bridge one when I'm strumming like a maniac). I'm also going to try to make a "big CBS" style headstock.

I'm going to need to get a pickguard made, and I may try to do it myself. I picked up a router from a garage sale for $10, and I'm looking through Craigslist for an old bathroom vanity so I can make a router table. The only issue I think I'm going to run into is cutting out the pickup hole with the square corners. I'm pretty sure I'll figure it out.

I will for sure be documenting everything. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna catch a bug and want to buy more kits than I have time to build! Just like amps. I used to pick up old organ amps off ebay and convert them to guitar. Still have a bunch that I need to convert, but I want to make my JCM800 2204 clone first.
