Thanks for the advice ozzbike. I presume you just do the headstock with careful taping of everything else?
Did some more coats of Tru Oil and I’m now on day 12 of curing time before I polish. On the neck/headstock I ran out of steam and won’t be doing enough coats to bury the decal but I’m fine with that....
Legend - I found a shop nearby with stock! What kind of brush/nib do you use to apply it?
PS. Checked out your website - nice sax playing, fellow Melbournite :)
I saw this video and really wanted to try to replicate this without dropping a lot of money on gold ink I'll use 5 drops of and never use again.
I tried out 2 markers with some test decal paper...
I've felt some light at the end of the tunnel this week as the Tru-Oil has really been building up and getting a good gloss. Now that I see it I think I'm going to go for a gloss rather than a satin...
Here's Noodles keeping my neck company while I was Tru-Oiling my body. 15+ coats applied at the dining table with NO cat hair...until today :( Just one, but it's fixable ;)

I'm loving all the information, expertise and science. Thank you - it's all super useful McCreed and Waz.
I've had some issues with streaking/lines in my Tru-Oil, which I'm sure is applicator (me) error.
I think the main issue is some coats have been too heavy.
Am I working it all the way in until it...
Waz, just confirming - the cutting compound/polishing is what creates the glossy look, so if I'm not after that just don't do that?
Thanks for the instructions dozymuppet. :)
Grak this is gorgeous. A Billy Bo is on my dream list to build. Lovely colours.
Where did you get the plans from? Also wondering what the effect of not chambering it would be? Just excess weight?...
Thanks for all the advice in this thread. Does anyone have any suggestions for getting more of a satin finish with tru-oil? What would be the finishing procedure after, say, 20 coats?
Well overall I'd have to say DT has not worked out the best for me. The colour looked good after the stain and intensifier coats, but has somehow faded while the final coat was drying. Or this may...
This is incredibly helpful, thank you Andy40!!!
Thanks Sonic Mountain and McCreed.
Re: steel wool - yes I realised this issue with bits of it before reading your post. Will steer clear of it from now on it is a PITA!
Off on holidays...
Andy - can you tell us when in the process you do TO after DT?
I’ve got my final final coat of DT drying now. How long do I wait before applying TO?
Is it:
A) apply final coat of DT, wait 2...

First coat of final coat on. I was sure the last stain coat was super dry, however I got a bit of colour transfer when applying the clear. Fingers crossed it’s fine - maybe it came off with...
Thanks @Fretworn. It’s come out kind of Star Trek-like - which I don’t mind at all :)
Two coats of intensifier and it’s looking great...

Waiting for it to dry to start final coats. Itchy hands!!! There’s going to be a hot dry spell coming up in Melbourne here so...
I settled on the final design (but have plenty of spare material if it doesn’t work out or there’s some disaster).
Made a template with MDF, doing some high school maths with Pythagoras to work...
Want a kind of 50s retro spacey vibe. I love the look of many builds by Harvester Guitars, Danelectro etc.
Here are a few I played with. The pickguard material is dark blue pearloid. I also made...
First time builder question.
I’m about to start my final coats of Dingotone after 2x stain, 2x intensifier. (It looks AMAZING!)
Dingobass or someone else, can you clarify what happens after the...
Haha thanks McCreed! Now just waiting for finish to dry and eyeing off next build - hah! Idle hands...
I will post more complete pictures of the headstock shape once it's dry.
Initially I wanted to go with a Peavey bass style headstock, but realised this wouldn't really go with the body shape. So I did this, which is pretty basic, but not exactly the same as a standard...
