This is how it turned out, pretty happy with it :)
Painting in the heat of the summer definitely makes a lot more sense.
The shaping was fairly standard, just rounded the horn a bit more, made it less triangular so it's more comfortable to pick up
Painting proceeded pretty well, about 3 coats of white primer, then...

So, finally got my hands on this five string bass kit. Wanted a fairly simple paint job compaired with previous builds. Decided on something similar to the Surf green look, but also wanted a...
Hmm, the drilled holes for the rear trem cover aren't centered on the trem cover holes... not essential. I guess I can make a custom trem cover.

Well, now to figure out how to set it up and tune ;)

Just got soldering, and setup to go
And hmm, the knob that came with it fits the cheap 5-way switch, but not the American one i upgraded to. Note the screws that come with an upgraded 5-way switch are bigger than the cheap one too, so...
Still waiting for it to dry properly, still slightly tacky. I am putting it outside on the nicer days now summer is on the way. Decided to start throwing the kit on it, and... there is no hole for...
The colour is Dingotone Ularu Red... Definitely more orange than red

With Intesifier. Yes, I know there is a spot of glue I missed on the lower horn. I can live with it, mostly keen to get it together.
I've applied multiple final coats to it, they're still...

Checking the electronics and First coat on the neck.

Ok, Second coat on the body. I rounded the edges and created a relief for the high frets ah-la PRS
Put a coat of colour on the...

Unboxing the guitar
Looks like there was tearthru on the routing between the neck and pickup, the layer under the veneer has a small piece glued in. Shouldn't affect the finish.
Ok, 1: the mobile version of this website doesn't have pic upload
2: the full version doesn't accept big pics.
So I've emailed some pics to my desktop, and will reduce the size, hopefully they'll...
It's an hsh Floyd rose veneer top. Ebony fretboard with shark tooth inlays. Trying to figure out pics on my phone, it's not obvious
starting on the final coats
I might need a pickguard to mount the single coil on. The two humbuckers have their individual mounting brackets... thinking I might get a HSH pickguard and trim it down.
two coats of intesifier, tedious drying times
So, I've put two coats of dye on it, waiting for it to dry in this cold, damp Victorian weather.
Well, interruption due to spending a week in hospital with a brain bleed... gave me a bit of time to think about it, thinking I'll put a radius of the back ~15mm, open up the 24th fret a la PRS, but...
New Idea, why bother with black at all if it's only on the back of the body. Use the back for additional practice bursting.
Hmm, researching dyeing... the burst I was planning was optimistic. It's a veneer flame finish. I had been planning to fade the black from the edge towards a hard red in the centre. But since the...
Snow at my place today (near Melbourne, Australia), not exactly wonderful weather for guitar building
Well, I recieved the DSS-1 on Monday 3/8/20. Dingotone Ularu, Gold Hardware, American 5-way switch.
I've checked most of the hardware, mounted the electronics on a box, and soldered it up,...
Spent the last couple of days removing paint from the body. back to scratch. (Mostly, going to re-mask the voids)
Ok, it seems the clearcoat from the spraycan has lifted the polyurethane, so the lifted areas have exposed the glitter. So, anything more enthusiastic than rubbing with my thumb damages the glitter...
