Yes, well said.
The control plate will act as a shield, as it's conductive. In theory, it will be grounded by the signal ground, i.e. the output jack ground is connected to the volume pot, which in turn is connected...
Cool. Thanks. I have learnt something today ;-)
Thanks McCreed. Yes, there is a fair bit of orange peel, and I am resigned to the grain texture showing through, as I didn’t get that flat enough before starting with the nitro. Out of interest, why...
Try the soldering iron and wet cloth trick first - that should reduce the dent.
Thanks guys.
I get the impression this is standard issue with this kit, i.e. they're supposed to have that figure. I am very happy with it, although I'm making a pigs ear of finishing it, but...
There are a number of ways to finish TO, and it really boils down to personal preference.
Some will say that you shouldn't need any polishing - your final coat of TO should be good enough as is....
Yes, true. I have since wiped and sanded off the mess I had made of it, and started again with very thin coats of TO, and it's working much better. I think I'm used to TO being fairly forgiving in...
I wouldn’t put try oil over a rosewood board. I think you’re better off with a finish that soaks in. I’m in the process of finishing a maple board with try oil, and it’s not much fun. It tends to...
I've now spayed a few coats of clear, and I think it's looking good. I think I'm going to stop there and leave it alone for a couple of weeks. I've still got some clear left, but I think I'll keep...
I am. The stain didn't really seem to take to the fretboard, but the colour's turning out daily even with the Tru Oil. Here's a photo - taken in bright sunlight, so I'm afraid the colours don't look...
I didn't add any colour to the Tru Oil - this is with the diluted stain on first, and then two coats of TO.
Thanks McCreed. I have a Parchment 'guard here, but also a pearled one on its way - I'll make that choice when it arrives. The Parchment one is looking pretty good though.
Yes, good point.
I've got a couple of coats of Tru Oil on mine now - here's how it looks. I'm pleased with the colour - what was a very subtle shade after only the stain has got much deeper with...
Oh, I think it already has ;-)
Here it as after the second can of blue nitro. I think my technique must have improved, as this seemed to go on much better, i.e. quickly made a big difference to the depth of the colour.

Pitbull sell it, but they're out of stock at the moment. I bought my Tru Oil from Ebay seller ozgunmart. 240ml for $40. The smaller bottle might not cut it ;-)
That looks great - I'm sure your son is very happy with it!
Yes - I didn't look closely enough. I haven't made a guitar with a basswood body (yet), so don't really know what to expect. Edit: Ah, it's Ash.
I guess that really leaves a key decision, JD - do...
Your burst looks good. I believe the ST-1 is basswood, so you should be OK without filling the pores, because it shouldn’t really have any. What sort of finish are you putting on it?
Here's my current build. I was thinking of adding a few drops of FW Prooftint to Tru Oil, but everything I read about doing so made it sound like a bad idea. In the end, I have diluted the stain - 2...
I love how this guitar's turning out. Bummer about the pick guard - I agree it would be nicer to have the engraved side on the back. Is there anything you could seal the black paint with before...
Yes that’s one whole can. How much of it ended up on the guitar is another matter.
It’s transparent blue nitro from SydneyGuitarSetups.

Thanks DM. I've since sprayed a can of transparent blue, which has reminded my how bad at spray painting I am. Unfortunately I had the nozzle oriented incorrectly on the first coat, so I've got some...
