Looking good Trevor <thumbs up>
Another fretless bass. I'm sure Dingo must be bouncing with joy ;)
Looks good classy.
Since you are building the instrument, you are free to mount the bridge as you see fit. The intent of an after market bridge is to be a replacement/improvement for an existing instrament. A bit like...
XP Rider: You might find files an rasps a good intermediate between sand paper and a dremel for sneaking up to where you need to get things with a bit more control.
A planing jig is pretty simple. the router is attached to a plank that sits across two surfaces of the same height like a couple of pieces of rectangular aluminium extrusion. The spoil board bit is...
I had a similar problem with the j pup for my pj AMG pups . To get the J pup to fit I had to plug the mounting locations with dowel, use a chisel to remove half of the dowel that was intruding into...
The pine kinda looks like maple. the Jarrah contrasts well. bet it's a heck of lot lighter than maple! That head stock looks a heck of lot more elegant than the fender one!
It's been a while, and I'm still going. The guys at the shed have had the router tied up with a Go board, so I haven't had a chance to cut the sides for the 10in radius carriage. In the meantime ...
Looking good! The extra work will be well worth it in the long run.
I had a similar issue with my hb-4. I set up the tail piece bang in the centre of the body, and then when I put strings on discovered the strings were off line with the neck. I solved the issue by...
Oh oh oh! Strawberry shortcake pink with rainbow sparkles!
Probably easier than my solution to the string spacing problem.... DIY pups...
Just make sure you don't skip grits when fine sanding the finish befor polishing, use the right compound and slow the sander down for polishing, and be patient.
fender3x: *most* of our hardwoods are harder than maple. good for fretboards and accents to bodies/necks, but way too heavy for a guitar body. hunting through piles of decking timber is a good...
Might as well use the Jarrah while you can, it's going to be in short supply after the end of the year.
I'm gobsmaked... I wasn't even sure if the pickup would work, let alone sound ok :o Like I said, it was an experiment to see if I could manage to wind 44 AWG wire with out snapping it . The standard...
Careful with the wool pad. They are one of the most aggressive pads in the polishing spectrum and can easily build up a lot of heat and melt/mar the finish rather than shine.
Trevor: more than I would like :P
fender: I had always thought that maple was pretty tough, compared to stuff like spotted gum it's pretty soft. using local hardwoods is nothing new, after all...
Well I gave the 12inch block a go, works well, but it still took me more than half an hour to mostly remove the tool marks from the ironbark. Much more effective than my shorter blocks. Since I only...
Trevor: double sided tape. I tried the "painters tape and superglue" method and found it was a pain, and the glue always ate through the tape. I'm finding that xFasten woodworking tape seems to work...
Thanx fender3x :)
Now that I have smoothed out the tool marks on the sanding block and applied a couple of thin coats of epoxy to the sole, I *am* in the process of applying 120 grit paper to it...
Progress as usual is slow. This time too many other non related projects. After the failure of using my neck shaping jig to radius fretboards, I made something, it starts with a J........
I did...
Well it's been a while, but I have been working on way too many other projects, some of which overlap, some of which are unrelated to guitar building.
I made new bobbins for the axe. They are...
hmm, I needed to work out how I was going to spray my basses, since they are neck throughs. with a few mods... yeh.. I think I'll steal this idea :P
looking good Trevor, following along to see them finished.
