A good capture Simon.
Years ago I discovered that a couple of strokes with a scraper with the grain after sanding can make those infuriating swirls stand out like a sore thumb.
Simon, seeing those orbital sander marks showing up after the first coats of finish. Have you ever tried using a scraper after sanding to get rid of those annoying wrong direction marks?
Tasty, really tasty :-)
Looking good after all your trials and tribulations of last year.
Personally I wouldn't use any gloss on what is going to be a finished with matte paint, this is "just in case" the two finishes don't play well.
A gentle flatting between the final paint coat and...
And another satisfied, repeat, customer.
That negative reviewer was not a first-person reviewer and I always take their views with at the very least a bucket of salt. In my book any decent review...
I can't help with all your questions, but here's a couple I have had "fun" with:
2 - That very much depends on the wood you are trying to colour. Maple is fairly resistant to staining so needs lots...
McCreed - You're not the only one that hopes those holes are in the right place. I've heard first hand the mutterings from someone who found that kit drilled holes were neither the right distance...
The undersize of neck bolt holes in the body is very useful for marking the hole positions in the neck. With the neck clamped in position you can either use a drill that fits the hole to mark the...
It's not many months since I did something similar.
There are plenty of hard-tail bridges out there so that's not an issue. The hard part is filling the void left by the tremolo. I chose to make...
Traditionally the bent up tab would be soldered to the body of the pot.
Some say it might be better not to bend that tab up but use a tiny bit of wire to connect the tab to the body, this has the...
Bitter experience says finishes always take far longer to dry than we want or thought possible. Unless you are brushing on that final coat which will go tacky before your eyes, and that fly will...
Great idea, but where do you draw the line.
Even the choice of pickups in such a kit would be one man's SD would be another man's D'M and so on.
Take your time.
Make sure all the bits are there (the pictures of your chosen instrument on the PBG website will help)
Ask questions.
Try and put the bits together without screws or glue.
Start a...
A time ago I did a Firebird bass kit with a three-point bridge and suffered the same problem. The bridge and its mounting posts being just way to high. The solution was to shim the neck in much the...
Thanks McCreed - Looking again (on a better monitor) I can see that the wiring of the jack is OK.
While the PBG videos are OKish, but don't make some things as clear as either PBG wiring diagrams or...
No it doesn't - you do not have a continuous earth circuit.
One wire (normally the bare screen) of each pickup must be connected to the earth connection on the jack - it is normal practice to do...
Ooops, that's an interesting way of wiring things up :-(
Lots wrong, and maybe some right and your sketch is incomplete.
PBG have a few wiring diagrams on their website, and one may be fairly close...
Welcome to the "mad house".
You are proving that it's never too late for an "old dog" to learn new tricks.
Have fun with your latest hobby, and don't forget they are YOUR instruments, built to suit...
A gorgeous quirky little instrument. It sounds a bit crisper and brighter in the second video.
In case any hadn't gathered "Barry Tone" is a JZ6....
Work has started, the headstock has been shaped, just a very simple curve, nothing too outrageous. And the outward facing surface of the...
Another month has passed.
The SH1 is finished and plays quite well, but the pickups may need to find replacements. Hardest jobs were working out where the strap buttons needed to be and how to hang...
Is it that the slot is out of line with the holes?
If that's the case, it may be possible to carefully increase the width of the slot to gain clearance around the pots. Care is needed not to remove...
Is it really nearly two months since I last posted anything about the build of my SH1?
Well, the date says so, thus it must be so.....
No real progress apart from finishing painting the cavities...
Welcome to the UK.
Building a bass is certainly better than spending endless hours of daytime TV!
