I love it when 3D printers occasionally live up to their promise.
And is that real or engineered rosewood? Given my current build, I have become very interested in how people deal with the engineered stuff.

It's real rosewood, this neck is from a couple of years ago.
My printer is a little cheapy from Officeworks, and apart from a terrible GUI it's been a pretty solid unit. I've fixed a lot of stuff with it.
Some guys I know have much better machines and what they get out of them is incredible. I'm also involved in a project where we have a printer farm producing our own 'interlocking brick system for tabletop gaming' based on my designs. If the project lead ever gets over his anxiety about releasing details I'll share it on here, its pretty cool.
This is engineered rosewood. It came on my TL1-R kit and I got another one from ebay.

I'm doing a 7.25: radius on it and using F&W mahogany stain to darken it.
I'll seal it with clear spray on lacquer that I use on the rest of the neck but probably sand it matt.
cheers, Mark.
The tabletop gaming design sounds very interesting. That's a hobby I wish I had time to develop. But since the only way to make time would be to drop electronics or guitar, it's probably not going to happen. And if the design is something you plan to sell at some stage you are right to keep it under wraps.
Interesting. I sealed my board with thin CA based on advice from Sonic and Simon. I still have work to do on getting an even finish on it (currently uneven sanding around the frets) but it feels as smooth as silk. My hope is for a smooth fretboard that doesn't grab strings but still looks like rosewood.
double post
Another 3D print experiment. A fret slotting mitre box. The tolerances are a little tight as I asked a bit much of my cheapy printer, so I might print another one, I think it'll work though.

Looks good. I would like a 3D printer, but I think that if I had one I would probably just end up churning out a long line of toys for my little helper.
They are a lot of fun. Really quite handy, but a reasonably steep learning curve. I'm on my 4th or 5th piece of modelling software, and each time I've had to re teach myself how to use it. I'm using Fusion 360 right now and its very good, but I'm still working a lot of it out.
My printer was $300 at office works with 2 spools of filament that last ages. Printing toys and stuff is a great way to get a handle on how to use it. I would not really recommend my model (Da Vinci Nano) it's a bit annoying, but Prusa and Ender make some good affordable kits which are better quality than mine, once the setup is done correctly.
For our table top game our engineer actually built his own initially because we couldn't get the resolution we wanted. We now run modified Enders, with the control code re-written to give finer layering.
Bit of progress, most of the polishing is done, ran out of swirl removers so I guess I'll do another pass after assembly. There is still one pretty thin area on one of the curves, but I'm over waiting for it to dry. There are a number of imperfections in this build anyway.
Got the neck and bridge on, but I drilled the control plate holes about .5mm too far south for the pick gaurd to fit really nicely, so filled with CA and I'll re-drill that so there aren't any gaps.
Had enough for now anyway.

Ooooh, shiiiiiny...
Looks better in the pics than it is, still a bit swirly in places. Probabyl sensible to wait until its a bit more assembled as I'm bound to put some marks on it.
Final fitment of the pickguard done, ended up with a little more gap to the bridge than I wanted, but oh well. If nothing else this build has reinforced that having really good templates saves a lot of headaches and fiddling around. I really need to knuckle down and get a new batch cut.

Looks great Phil, may the production line roll on
Mmm.....tidy work. Very nice Phil, even this test model looks the business. Well done!
Oh boy, I wish Brendan. It's another step in the right direction.
So basically its together and makes noise. Needs string trees, strap buttons and a proper setup but an initial play around is very encouraging. Sounds just like a tele, maybe a little fatter on the neck pickup, but otherwise nice and jangly. I'd forgotten how much I like that tonerider pickup in the bridge.
I'll let it settle down and start tweaking it this week, then a final polish and detail and I think it'll be all good.

You gotta be happy with that Sonic!
I like that a lot! Well done, sir.
I like that even the neck bolts are offset. The attention to detail is a standout here.

That's two magnificent axes you have there Sonic. I'd be super proud if i could make something half as good as that. Well done mate, another positive step towards mass production!
Looks good from here!
Thanks everyone, really appreciate the feedback.
Good work Sonic.
A strat pickup in the neck makes all the difference in a tele IMO.Quote:

That's why the Fender Custom Shop Twisted Tele neck pickup is my favourite for that position. I've just never could bonded with the standard tele neck tone.
Top marks on the build.
Looks like a guitar you would pay a big sum for in a store.
Thanks Col. I'm in two minds about selling it. It has a few imperfections, which are not dealbreakers, but its not quite the quality I want and would expect if i purchased it myself. The Deluxster is the same, probably a slightly better build, but not what I'm comfortable to sell.
My plan at the moment is to build one more of each shape, both with double humbuckers. The Deluxester in the same colour scheme and the Shoegazer in Black on Black using stain and satin poly. Those two will be the first offical for sale builds. I'm also thinking of just using the SMG logo on the headstock rather than the names I've invented.. will see.
I've been tinkering away with the Shoegazer this week. My fret install on this one is not as good as the previous and I've had a couple of bum notes and re dressing to do in a few spots. It's very close to being Ok now. I like the D profile, its a lot thinner than the Deluxester, but still pretty wide and meaty, which is what I prefer. The Queensland maple neck is so solid. Truss rod works great and if feels good in your hands.
I was getting pretty wild hum out of the neck pickup, so I pulled it all apart and shielded the cavities. I also re did all the wiring as it was still in standard oriention, just with the control plate flipped. I thought I'd grabbed a pic, but apparently not looking through my phone. I colour coded everything in black and white and tried to make it super tidy. I've been inspired by Woltz's wiring that looks so pro.
It's a lot better, but there is still a bit of single coil noise that I suppose is unavoidable. My little VOX pathfinder really brings out the worst in some guitars lol. My big Ross bass amp is much more forgiving.
I'll try and get a bit of a demo up over the weekend.
No I haven't ordered anything for them yet. It'll probably have to wait until tax return time. Are you thinking some Woltz Specials ?:D
I will really, absolutely have to sell the next two if I want continued co-operation from the home front..... the 'cheaper than cars' excuse is wearing thin lol.
These are just getting better and better!

That’s a clean looking guitar. I’d want to pick that up in a music shop. Both guitars look beguiling.
Just tell me that Squier didn't steal your body design.

Heh, yeah it’s definitely not the only offset Tele style guitar out there and not as obviously unique as the Deluxester, but next to more fendery guitars it’s actually pretty different. Next one will have the same 2 humbucker layout as the Deluxester, just for simplicity’s sake. It’ll keep a similar pick guard shape, but I have changed it a bit now.

Woltz, I’ll be in touch :)
Well after a bit of a hiatus I'm starting to ramp up to another scratch build. In my break from building I've been doing a fair bit of work on the house. One fairly big job was rebuilding the front steps which were rotten and only just holding onto the front of the house. Out of the 7 old treads there were 4 that were clearly hardwood and in reasonable nick. So I stashed them away for future use as guitar building materials. Also during this time my band acquired a new drummer, who turns out to be quite a handy fellow, that happens to have a thicknesser and jointer/planer. So I'm trading him some work on his guitars for some dressing. Here is the first body blank candidate. I'm pretty sure it's stringybark or 'white mahogany' the same as the first deluxester. I've been wanting to use some recycled timber in my builds so this is a good start.
Still not sure which I will build, the standard or offset shape, but I can start collecting some bits and go from there.

Glued these together today. Prob not the best setup but looks like it's working fine.
Still not sure if I want to do an offset or og shape with this.

Did you use biscuits or dowels when gluing together? I ask because I have been offered some 200 year old house timbers (no idea what species of wood but probably oak) and I will need to put 3 pieces together when I do my first scratch body
No I didn't use any dowels, the edges are nicely dressed so I don't think it'll be an issue.
