Build 4 - AG-2
Onto another build. This one is not for me though!
I will be trying to achieve a classic style SG. The kit arrived last week and looks good.
I will try to achieve a cherry red body and neck using DT Karijini Red.
So far I have filed the body contours to increase the angle a bit - (I think I need to purchase a rasp saw!). Sanded the body and neck to 240 grit. Levelled and filed the frets.

One coat of DT Karijini Red was added two days ago, today added a 5:1 mix of Karijini Red to Black stump to try and darken it.
Note that the first coat was less red than the photo shows.

Looking good so far. Happy with the darkness, or too soon to tell?

Hi Dozy,
Yeah, I'm very happy with the second coat. The red is a good cherry colour in my opinion. I still have a bit more mix left so may give one more coat tomorrow.
As you know it has been hot in Perth today and the stain is already dry.
Then I will probably use Tru-oil as a top coat (and miss out on the DT intensifier coat).

Was it hot today? I hadn't noticed XD

That’s looking really good. I look forward to seeing how this progresses.

I gave the body and neck another coat of stain mix. I have now also added about 10 coats of tru-oil. The colour lightened a bit with the tru-oil. Will keep adding a few more tru-oil coats.
Also for the black head stock I have added 1 ply pick guard material, trimmed it to size, and added some tru-oil over the top. Some gold brand name stickers are to be added to the top. Also fitted a purchased truss-rod cover.

Did some work today on a pickguard as I was not completely happy with the supplied guard. I had purchased a guard but was not happy with it either. So I decided to have ago and make my own. I built a template from mdf and then routed out the pickguard material. It needed a bit of filing to the pup recess corners so that the pups would fit in. Quite happy with the final result.

Oh bother. The tru-oil has lightened the colour not darkened it as expected.
Time to start again!

Take 2:
Sanded it all back.
Added 5% FW black.
Lightly sanded back.
Added 2 coats of red alcohol ink.
Added 5+ coats of tru-oil.
Much happier with the colour this time. More tru-oil to follow.
