Thanks. 2 alternatives with different outcomes. I guess I will work it out from first principles and see if I get the same result and whether both can be incorporated together relatively easily. Brian is a mathematical (and musical) genius so I would probably run with his version once I have the nerve to drill holes in my guitar and add switches.
are you making a red special copy or just putting the wiring in a different project?
I am not making a copy. Considering imitating the wiring on a different project. Once I have it worked out I will probably test wire it outside the guitar body before committing to internal and cosmetic surgery.

I have done this - with varying degrees of success. Sometimes the switches work, sometimes they crackle, sometimes they don't work. I'm not sure if it was my soldering or the kit itself, but I can tell you the instructions on one side are different to other side. And you will need hands steady as a surgeons. It's all really small stuff.
