Absolutely. I learned my lesson the hard way! I used a walnut tinted filler on my latest project to get a slightly darker contrast and it's looking good so far. I've got it prepped very smooth for the application of the finish which should make the process much easier and the final product better.

I haven't grain filled as I read somewhere if you're going for a non-gloss, non-highly polished finish it's ok. Will anything bad happen if I don't grain fill? @Cascadia - how did you 'learn the hard way'?
I haven't used grain filler on any of mine. But I do use high fill primer for the painted ones. It's not strictly necessary, depending on the finish being used, but can save a bit of time and effort down the track. How are you planning on finishing it?
