I am thinking about doing something a little different with my oil/wax based finishes this time. The body is already streaked with the zebrawood.....I am thinking about hitting the big green shed and grabbing a couple of different stain colours to add to my plum red colour. Maybe then lay out a multi colour geometric style stain pattern.

Lets see how the wood is.

I came very close to chasing a set of gold colour tuners to try and get a black and gold themed pattern....to match the saddles on the bridge. But, I think straight black will do the job.

I'd have to get a bigger house to fit 30 guitars in. I've only hit double digits a couple of times before I sold some on thin the numbers.
My wife is great, but I might be pushing it with multiples of ten!

I look forward to seeing what you come up with. I've got my eye on one of the zebra wood strat kits...or maybe the ash hardtail strat...or... :p

Wow the delivery was quick. The box arrived this afternoon. They swapped everything out and put in my extras....but they removed the precision bass pickups in the chrome hardware kit....and put the black hardware kit in...but not the pickups.

Lucky I ordered the Entwistle pickups, but I will have to find some under pickup foam and springs.

The body has a nice grain and look to it. The Maple neck and fretboard is really nice. I think the black and light colours will make a nice contrast.

Off to work again. Start on it next week.

Yesterday I sanded through to 180grit....then timbermate (Cedar/Blackwood) and then sand at 240 grit...then two coats of shellac to try and even out the stain that came next.

This morning I took the plunge. Never ever had a good result with trying to make a burst finish. I have never tried it with alcohol based stains....always water. So this morning we have Golden Teak, Jarrah and Brown Japan prooftint alcohol based stains from Feast Watson.

I have done one coat only...and tried to feather the edges of each colour.

The zebrawood gives an amazing effect to the whole picture itself. I think the dark colours are looking great.

Now the big decision.....Tru Oil or Fine Buffing Oil and Wax...which finish do I feel comfortable with? I always sand through the edges with Tru Oil....and the fine buffing oil takes a lot of the colour out as you apply it with steel wool.

I suppose there is always wipe on poly....but when I wet sand the edges I get through into the colour often.

Any thoughts????

Keen to see how your burst goes.

Truoil with its yellowing effect may reduce the depth of darkness you might want to highlight in the zebra wood... not sure if it’s open grain and buffing oil/wax sounds good.

I made a decision to try a burst with Feast Watson Prooftint and to use Fine Buffing Oil...which has become my go to...as the finish.

Well only one issue...the application with steel wool does draw some of the stain colour out with each application.

I have done two coats with 00 steel wool and then this morning a third coat at 0000 steel wool.

I like the finish...but I do think the burst is really subtle now. Mmmmm....I don't know.

I intend to complete the remaining coats with cloth and just rub the oil on.

Yep steel wool sucks the stain out of the body.

I have done four coats of Fine Buffing Oil two at different grades of steel wool each.

Note to self for future use. One coat only with two grades only of steel wool. Any more coats to be applied with soft cloth...in my case an old T shirt.

I will let it hang now for a week...until my next days off...and decide then whether I sand it or keep going.

I don't mind the finish, but the burst is basically non existent.

I think my art practice probably falls into the more expensive category. Not destructive though, so I guess that's a plus!

This is a PBG Zebrawood Body precision base with a maple neck and maple fingerboard. A Black pearloid pickguard holds a set of Entwistle Pickups (Ceramic Bar). The volume and tone circuit is a repeat of my norm....split the P-Bass pickup and use a push pull volume pot. The Tone Pot is a Bourns mini pot. Orange Drop Capacitor gives tone and sound is moved out via a switchcraft jack socket. A Black Tusq nut and a complete black out hardware kit round out the fittings....the bridge has been swapped out for a Wilkinson Black Bridge I imported from the U.K.

The body is stained in an attempted burst with Feast Watson alcohol prooftint stain. The body is then sealed with a number of coats of Feast Watson Fine Buffing Oil.

The neck colour is Japan Brown FW stain and the neck is sealed with a couple of Tru Oil coats.

Both the neck and the body have a number of coats of both Gillys Cabinetmakers wax and then Gillys Carnauba Polish to finish.

I like the difference in the Entwistle pickups between ceramic bar (this one) and the Neodymium set I have in a two piece Ash Body P Bass. These ones have a brighter and rockier sound. The other ones are more Blues or Jazz focussed with lots of deep punch.

Learning note for me.....applying the Buffing Oil with steel wool as directed will suck out a lot of the stain. (The body has Golden Teak in the middle, Red Jarrah around that and then Brown Japan on the edges and around the front and back sides.)

The body is really light.....feels nice to hold and the whole thing plays really well.
