Greetings, I'm Kari from Finland and this is my 2nd diy project what I'm making. 1st one is my Harley Bentons Les Paul what I made couple years ago and that is my nr. 1 guitar for now. I have get interest to bass and I thought buy or make and deside to build one.

Hi, Kari. I admit I've always kind of wanted an Explorer-style bass. Looking forward to watching your build.
Just a quick heads up - there will probably be a bit of the heel hanging over the body - worth putting the neck in the body and making sure - otherwise you may end up with a little blonde patch - see below (pinched from Wazkelly's EX-5 build - http://www.buildyourownguitar.com.au...ead.php?t=4257).
Is any body else liking Kari's workspace wall? That 3100 pickup is a killer, I think its a Ford Coupe in the top left too.

I would try fitting the pickups in the routs. Whilst they will normally fill them fairly well, you may have enough of a gap around the edges so that you can see the light wood of the sides of the rout, which will show up against the dark stain. So you might want to think about staining the sides of the pickup routs, just in case.
Actually I plan to set coppertape in to pickup routs. Not sure if I set orginal humbuckers or should I test my Tesla pickups. Those are little bit smaller so I need to figure out somethin pickup cover if I choose use Tesla mics. Of course I can do that pickup cover eather way. We'll see.Quote:

Gotta love another Explorer Bass build.
I used a special black conductive paint in the cavities which ends up a matt finish. Works well and did a good job of hiding the edges where pickups did not fully fill the cavity.
Being humbuckers you don't really need to bother with copper tape anywhere other than in the controls cavity.

Looks ok even though where neck joins body appears high as that is the same as on my EX5.

What tends to happen on bolt-on versions of set-neck guitars is that you don't have enough thickness of wood to keep the same neck angle and height above the body, without making either the neck, or the body cutaway for the neck, too thin for a solid, safe joint. So the neck angle (which on the set-neck will give you the required string height above the body at the bridge) is decreased or removed completely, and the required string height at the bridge obtained by having the fretboard sit higher above the body - which allows for a solid neck and heel joint.

It measures 9.5mm to the crown of each of those last few frets. Action is still a little bit high but no more than 1mm and wouldn't recommend sanding base of neck pocket to drop such a small amount. On my 2 Tele builds they needed between 5mm - 7mm to be sanded off to drop the level and also help get action down low enough.

The project continued littlebit more in this weekend.
I wasn't satisfied with the result of front side paint job. So I Grinded paint and varnish off and try to do it one more time.

Hey guys.
Okey Explorer is almost finished. My cousen was helping with wiring and something went wrong 'cause bass is not give any sound.
Need some advice.

Did you test the wiring while it was out of the body, like this? Was it working before you installed it?

The wiring looks generally OK and, while it’s difficult to be certain from the images, it looks likely that one of the ‘hot’ lugs on the pots or related connections is touching the copper shielding and shorting your signal to ground. Possibly even the jack ‘hot’ arm is shorting on the shielding when you insert a plug, as the arm flexes outward and can make contact on the hole’s lining in some cases
Double check everything is working outside the body and, if it is, then placing some insulating electrical tape over the copper in strategic places, like below and to the side of where the pots lugs will sit and in the hole for the jack where the hot arm sits may solve it.
Let us know if you can’t solve it.
Hey. I made couple little moves. I set that ground wire to bridge what I forget at first place and I take copper tape off around a Jack and it is giving awesome sound. Unfornately pots are not working that well. Neck volume pot doesn't do anything. Bridge volume and tone pots kill all volume.
But it is giving a sound and it is almost ready.
