Dedmans TL-1TB Kustom

I'm building this at the same time as the WL-1 Kustom , that way I have something to do while waiting on parts for the other.

All hardware shown in the photo are place holders, waiting on a Goto switch plate, a chrome humbucker ring, and a Vibramate bridge and trem adaptor to fit the Duesenburg Bigsby style trem. Pickguard is a place holder until I make a template up for a plain white guard to take the neck humbucker and cutaway more at the top to miss the F hole. I've done a preliminary fret polish and am part way through shaping the head stock atm.

fitted the hardware today, pick up cavities need to be adjusted and a pick guard designed next.
Bridge is a Vibramate, the back section of it didn't fit the Duesenburg trem and was too short as well, just as well I didnt really need it. Saddles are Goto
Interesting to note , when the kit arrived I thought it didn't need much sanding, after a few days of SE QLD humidity it's looking like it has a 3 day growth. :confused:

Looking forward to watching this come together. Have been pretty tempted by that kit

I made a custom pick guard to accommodate the neck humbucker on a Tele.

Aint that strange...just when you want a HB neck PUP rout, as what usually comes standard, you end up with a perfect single coil one instead!

Hey Ded, I haven't been on in a while and this is the first post I looked at. This should be another interesting project, looking' good already.

This is moving forward slowly,high temps/humidity, lots of RL drama and a shortage of cash slowing things down.I now have all the parts and paint on hand. Have done the pick up rout adjusting, got the body in primer and the neck with about 6 coats of Tru Oil.

got some paint on the body today, the neck has about 15 thin coats of TO on it

Finally got back into it. My Mum whom I have been carer for for 6yrs years passed away last month after 6 months of hospitalisation, so when I have worked on this kit my mind has been elsewhere, add in the extreme humidity which isn't good for painting and .....
Anyway the kit presented a problem in the painting, the binding was extremely thin making masking it near impossible and scraping afterwards a hair raising experience, so getting a good edge on it has proven difficult if not impossible. Anyway I had to decide when to stop fiddling and get on with it so the first clear coats went on early this morning. Neck is finished (Tru Oil)

Hey mate, sorry to hear about your Mum and hope you are doing ok.

My deepest condolences mate. Lost my mum in 2007, then my dad in 2011 from cancer. Hang in there mate. You never get over it but you do get through it.

More progress! Next is to make that cardboard pick guard into plastic. I have an old Makita jigsaw with a busted on/off switch which I'm going to make into a scroll saw, so really next job is "make scroll saw". I will also need it for making the alloy parts on the WL build.

Looking good Dedman. Are you set on the pickguard shape? I’d kind of like it to have sexier curves on the bass side.

funny you should say that, I was just looking at it again and thought the same

just wiring and a nut to do. She should make noise tomorrow :D

Looks cool man. What's the pickup in the neck? (sorry if you've mentioned already)

it's a GFS Retro-tron, supposedly this one is voiced like a Rickenbacker (jangly) I guess I'll find out tomorrow when i wired it up :D

Looks delicious! What's the plan with pot and cap values being a single and bucker combo?

Cap is a .022 and pot is a 500K push pull so I can split the bucker. I'll see how that goes. I have another guitar with a bucker in the bridge and a single in the neck and used a .047 and 500k and that sounds fine to my ear.

Thanks to this and BG's Sexual Chocolate I really want to build something with a Bigsby now. :(

Wired, strung with chinese strings but sounding rather nice. Much work to do on set up, a few buzzes. Yes Simon, wiring worked first go, which was amazing as I hadn't done a split humbucker with a tele switch and a push pull and didn't have a wiring diagram. but it works!

Frankie, I have 2 guitars with genuine Bigsbys, one with a Chinsby and I have to say the Duesenburg version leaves them for dead. So smooth,nice soft spring and you can adjust the arm in so many planes. I have a hollow body PRS style on order, it will be getting a Les Trem.
