This is my first attempt at Shou Sugi Ban. Quite happy with it. I prefer it than painting basses now. Looks nicer and i love the wood grain. I feel painting robs you of the natural wood grain feel and look.

I actually prefer the pic before the clear went on, it has an almost fur look to it.

It depends on the wood. Maple is a lot harder, so i have to go slower and hold the flame a bit closer. For; ash, basswood, white poplar, alder, mahogany, zebrawood and paulownia...Its pretty much the same distance and timing in the movement forward of the flame til i get the desired effect. Then once all done, i go over the bits i am not satisfied with, thats when its a bit more complex. Kinda like airbrushing with a flame and shading with fire.Quote:
