A belt-drive, semi-hollow, PRS-type, book-matched, scratch-build?
Get your motor runnin'
Head out on the highway
Lookin' for adventure
And whatever comes our way
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space
I like smoke and lightning
Heavy metal thunder
Racin' with the wind
And the feelin' that I'm under
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space
Like a true nature's child
We were born, born to be wild
We can climb so high
I never wanna die
Born to be wild
Born to be wild
Hmmm, Easy Rider style chain drive?
Going clean & green renewable then?
Make sure to give it a 6-a-side F style headstock. :p
YEs yes yes!
For some people the dream is to one day complete a novel. For me, the dream is the scratch build. Respect.
Check out Robins builds in the Non Pitbull guitars section. Robin crafts some amazing things, on a workmate and a patio table completely without power tools, using plywood’s, pine, recycled hardwoods and an old church pulpit in one case.
i was content to modify and build kits but reading his threads motivated me to do scratch builds.
Yeah I am slowly chipping away at a full scratchie design. Going to be pretty interesting, but will need to wait until I'm in a new house.. so it'll be mid next year. Plenty of mods and fine tuning to do on the herd to keep me busy after the steampunker is done.
Looking forward to seeing this one evolve Frankie.
Anyone have access to a laser cutter that can do 12mm MDF?
"Do you expect me to talk, Goldfinger?"
"No, Mr Bond, I expect you to cut out a guitar template."
Having been armed by the bride and the brides father, we will be cracking on with the templates in house.
There will be a central core to house the pups and anchor the bridge and tail stop, with chambering beneath the upper and lower bouts, twinned HBs on/on/on mini switch and a side mounted jack.
Well life gets in the way of guitar building. I haven't touched anything in a meaningful way lately so there are a few projects hanging. (I hear the collective gasps of shock from you all, sadly it's true.)
The most work i've done is getting the chambering plan sorted out for this thing
Attachment 31197
As with all the FrankenLab builds the final execution may in no way reflect the plan, but we'll live in hope :)!
There is still some levelling of the body blank to do, as well as actually getting these templates cut, but slowly slowly we shall get things moving.
Look very interesting Frankie

It's going to be light as a feather. Do you think neck dive will be an issue?
It might be TK, I was thinking of ways to lighten the headstock as well, potentially some lighter tuners and through holes. Perhaps a slightly off set rear strap button etc. The body blank is some fairly weighty African Mahogany, it will be getting a 12mm Blackwood top (or zebrano) which might offset tings a bit
Plan looks good. Just wondering if there's any benefits in chambering versus going hollow / semi-hollow. I know there's a semi-hollow Les Paul without f-holes. Not sure what sort of chambering or hollow pattern they use.

Well that wasn't hard to find....

Thanks for that KuanJB, I'd not seen that, nor heard the G rationale behind their systems.
It raises some questions about what I've designed above, and i think i might go back to the drawing board and rework it somewhat.
I'm thinking:
- Pull back from the Post mounting locations for safety's sake
- Reduce chamber number, but increase size, currently drawn as 5/8" might go up to 3/4" or 7/8" (15.8mm, 19mm and 22.2mm for the non imperial speakers)
- Rework the control cavity to reduce in size/match the lower bout curve.
We shall see, first we draw, then we measure, then we measure again, and again, then we pontificate, then we dither, then we cut. after which we say "Awesome!" Or we say "@(#&%!!".
No worries. I also had not seen it. Might convert it to a PDF for future reference.
It is interesting that they slightly modified the routing in the latest iteration. Really curious now what effects they found by the slight modifications.

Some slow progress on this one, need to trim the blank down a little, and do some more hogging out for pups and controls.
I’m going to pare a control cover off the back as part of the thinning down, I want to reduce the thickness by about 10 -12mm.
The drop top that will go on this, is going to get a typical PRS carve, top mounted pickups and a very simple 1V, 1T config.
But, for now, we hog....

I see you've gone for the full safety footwear.
I hope you weighed the blank beforehand, so you know how much you lightened it by once you've finished all the cavities.

Control cavity cover, crafted from the rear of the blank, to attempt to grain match.
Rough hogged relief cavities finish routed (some residual crenellations from the Forster bit left due to poor bit positioning)
Marked out and made cover routing template.
Final positioned the body outline template.
Left to do:
- hog out and rout PUP cavities
- flatten drop top rear (plane marks and slight bow)
- decide on plastic or flame maple binding
- mark up and rout TR channel and carbon rod channels
- mark out tenon and socket

Flame maple! Flame maple! Flame maple! (But I’m sure plastic would be easier).
Flame maple binding? Will the guitar belong to a dentist? ;)
So I’ve been playing with another scratch build idea, I can’t be bothered starting another thread so I’ll throw it in here for opinions and discussion purposes.
24 fret Multiscale, 26.7” and 25.5”, Vertical at 9.
Will be HH, but still contemplating HSS.
Bolt on Laminated neck.
Thoughts/opinions/jeering and pitchforks welcomed.

Looks dead sexy. Proceed by all means 😁
Seems sufficiently nuts. I'd like to have a go at playing one at some point...
