Ordered the kit today - Can't wait!
So what are your build plans??
I got one a few weeks back... still deciding on a colour scheme and finish coats...
G'day Marcel
The kit arrived a couple of days ago. Gotta say I'm impressed.
Planning on using the supplied hardware at this stage & dingo tone finish.
I was just looking at your build dairy & seen the issue with the jack.
I was able to ream both ends of the jack hole using a drill bit & turning it by hand. Didn't think to check the depth. Thinking I can use the same method in the cavity & make the hole big enough to use a socket to tighten the nut (maybe)
Have you had any other issues?
My biggest and most huge issue is/has/will be what colour I want it to be...lol
Any other things I find I'll put in my build diary...
Yep, the wood in the body is quite soft so cleaning out the socket hole for me was relatively simple to do literally by hand... Sad thing is my largest drill bit is 13mm and everything else I have larger are standard hole saw affairs so using a dremel was my only option to get things right for the nut on the socket...
Spent hours trying to do a neat job but it ended up rough but functional haha Attachment 27581
Question the input jack has 3 posts which one's do I use
First couple of D/tone
It's a bit brighter than I was expecting
Any suggestions on how to make it a bit darker, (not keen on rubbing it all off again)
.Attachment 27591 Attachment 27592
By darker I presume you mean of the same colour tone?
If so, just keep adding more base stain however if you mean a different colour shade darker, welcome to the unpredictable game we are addicted to called kit building. Rarely does a colour scheme in theory end up the same in reality as the timber used will dictate a lot towards final outcome. Your headstock looks more orange than red which could be lighting in that shot, but if it is a different shade or colour it will need more coats than the body to even things up a bit.
Unfortunately trial and error may be required.

Thanks for the advice.
I was hoping for a darker shade & that some one out there had added a tint to D/tone before.
But the more I look at it the more I like it. So I'll give it a couple more coats & see what happens.
Yes the head stock photo was a lighting thing
Cheers
Ron
The overall depth will improve a lot with clear coats as well. But as Waz said, I'd probably give it another stain pass if you want it darker.
Gave it a couple more coats today & the depth improved heaps. (even though it doesn't show in the photo)
The intensifying coat next
Attachment 27621
that top is starting to look TASTY! Really nice work Doubleedge!
4 or 5 coats of base stain brings out the best in DT in terms of depth of colour but if happy with 2 or 3 coats no point going any further.
A few coats of Intensifier brings on an amazing appearance, hard to describe but you will know what I mean when you see a couple of coats done.
Thanks Frankenwashie
Wazkelly
It's had 5-6 coats in 2 sessions. Hope your right about the intensifier.
Will give it a go over the weekend.
After one ir two intensifier coats you should see a remarkable difference.

That looks really wonderful, well done!
Looking pretty good so far...
Marcel
Do you want to swap yours looks amazing. Well done!!!
Really??
You can't see the serious flaw ?? ... Well, 2 flaws actually that in my eyes yours does not have...
Haha
Don't worry mine has it's flaws too!
Interesting how we are more critical of our own projects eh
Lol... yeah, character that has you wishing it didn't have...
Trouble is you guys only see the photos... the best photos... and not all the real life angles that spawn those wonderful ideas of "character"... Maybe I simply complain too much and need to take some new photos that highlight the issue... or maybe not...lol
2nd intensifying coat today. Starting to look pretty good I think. ( Lots of character lol )
Only decision now is whether to give another intesifying coat or go to the finishing coats.

Generally the colour does deepen over a few months as the finish totally cures. Not a lot, but a little. If truly in doubt, leave it a week and you may find patches you have missed that convince you to do a further coat.
Thanks Fretworn I'll try that
The 3rd intensifying coat finally dried so applied the 1st of the final coats today
Attachment 27878Attachment 27877Attachment 27879
Looks great... The photos give it almost a beaten Copper sheet look...
Nearly had enough of thie D/tone! Bloody stuff never seems to dry!
Applied the final top coat about 2 weeks ago. The colour had faded quite a bit from when the 1st coat was applied (see photos below)
Attachment 28188Attachment 28191
Left it to dry for the last 2 weeks & it's faded a heap more (see photos below).
I've been putting it out in the sun each day. Could that be why it's fading so much?
Attachment 28189 Attachment 28190
Certainly possible that the UV light is breaking down the pigments.
I don't have any specific experience with these products, but you may be better off hanging it in front of a fan to help evacuate the solvents away from the surface and speed up drying.
It was in front of a gas heater with the fan on it during the colder weather but it was taking so long to dry I put it in the sun when it warmed up.
I'm considering rubbing the whole lot off & starting again.
Does anybody have any suggestions for an alternative? I have found a product on ebay called ColorTone. Anybody had experience with this?
I'm not sure what would be compatible. Even rubbing most of it off I'd say there will be a residue which might affect any further top coats you apply.
To be honest - waiting for the finish to dry is about 90% of the time you spend on these things. It takes are a really long time for most decent finishes to harden up properly. I fully sympathise with how frustrating it can be. Movement of air is more important than heat to get most products to cure.
What dye/stain did you use out of curiosity?
Used the DingoTone Karijini Red.
I started the finishing process late July.
Bummer.....that is really weird.
Whereabouts are you located as some parts of this big vast land are not that well suited for using this stuff.
Not sure sanding back and reapplying something else is really a better option as that may risk losing the quilted top. I have used Color Tone a couple of years ago and mine was a watered down version but believe if you can get your hands on the full strength stuff it is not too bad. Just not sure if it will take on top of DT which seems to be an oil based product. In fact, not sure if any other stain will take on top of where you are at from using DT.
If you still have some base & intensifier left I would suggest lightly sanding off the top coat/s, reapply, leave to dry for 3 - 4 weeks and then look at using something else as the top coat.
My 1st & 2nd builds were done with DT and felt cursed every time I went to apply DT top coats so ended up switching to Tru Oil which goes down easy on top of DT with no troubles at all. Just need to factor in the slight amber tint and the fact that TO does take on an aged look fairly quickly....very noticeable after 12 - 18 months. Not so bad or noticeable on Red, Brown, Yellow, Orange tones.
Cheers, Waz
Thanks for the advice Wazkelly
I'm Located at Temora which is south western NSW.
We had a pretty cold winter here so was setting the body up hanging about 1.5-2m away from our main heater/fan. When the weather warmed up I figured it would dry quicker in the sun. Maybe the earlier coats hadn't completely dried which has caused the bleaching?
Have watched some vids on TO & looks fairly user friendly so will give your advice a go.
Yeah, DT and colder or more humid climates = much longer drying & curing times between coats. Not unusual to need 7 - 10 days or more between coats. It does test your patience.

Yep patience has been stretched.
Thanks for your help
Do you have any DT base and intensifier left over?
If yes, warmer weather and leaving it to cure a bit longer before swapping to a different top coat might help salvage what you have already done.

Yes I have some base & intensifier left. There should be enough for at least a couple of coats of each. I'll keep it out of the sun this time too.
Thanks again for your assistance
