gr1sf project saved

hi there as some of you would have seen i had problems with my gr1sf project, basically my original stained look was jeopardized by sanding through the veneer by mistake! racked my brains on how to save it and this is what i came up with, sides neck and back in crimson guitars orange stain and front of body and peghead metal flake atomic orange happy is an understatement, all metal flake, staining, pinstriping and so on all done by me, other than the p90 pickups and the truss rod cover and gretsch knobs its out the box stock. the nut will need replacing as its miles to high and i'm yet to wire in the pickups and input jack but thought id share some photos looking forward to your opinions thanks

Very nice. How did you do the metal flake? I've been thinking about a sparkle/metal flake finish for a future project.

thanks so much for the great comments, i've been custom painting cars for a number of years on and off so had a bit of practice, the proper process for the flake is obviously prep prep and more prep until you have a smooth finish, choose a base colour that closest matches your flake, apply this then a fine grab coat of laquer to make the thick coats stick, then you can either 1, mix flake into your clear as much or as little as you want apply coats until your happy with the amount of flake let this dry then wet sand and reclear until smooth or 2, buy a dry flake gun, these are specially designed to apply solid flake in as little clear as possible so grab coat, one really wet coat, apply flake with dry flake gun let tack of then apply more clear until buried, wet flat and reclear until smooth. this is the method i use. the guitar had 2 flake coats, 6 coats on top. then was wet sanded and 4 coats applied then another sand and 2 more coats so 15 coats in total. lots of work and practice needed but very satisfying

Wow!! That pinstriping is fantastic! It's so easy to go overboard with a feature like that, but yours is bang on. Did you use a brush?

Very 50's retro looking and turned out much better than having a stained top.

I love the whole hot rod vibe. So many nice choices here, the flake finish, the custom knobs, the matching cream pinstriping & pickup covers, everything looks really great, well done!
