Scratch build- by Royal appointment!

I've hit a few hurdles with the Thylacine build recently (which I will detail later) so that's been put in abeyance for now. No biggie as it's not time sensitive.

This one however is.

In what could be a dream build or a total nightmare I've accepted a commission! The task: build a replica stage prop of the Red Special.

An old school chum of mine is the musical director of an upcoming production of We Will Rock You in Adelaide, and he's asked me to make a copy of the iconic instrument for the show. It doesn't have to function but it has to look as close to the original as possible.

Challenge accepted!

I've made a rough template of the body in these pics and will now start on the neck...

Hah that'll be fun. I have my first commission coming up in the next couple of months. Equal parts excited and terrified.

Getting there- this is the back side and the roughly cut neck. Shaping the neck beings tomorrow and also sourcing the bits and bobs for the front side.

I can just picture some air guitar technique happening with this thing to Tie your Mother Down.

First the test runs of various dilutions. Very homeopathic.

And the first (and probably only) coat on the back.

Further progress. Going to source plastic for the scratchplate.

Succumbed to the irresistible urge and put another coat of finish on. That'll do it. Cut out the scratchplates and will await the results of the clearcoat experiment on them; dull matte black is exactly that- dull.

And finally put the dummy pickups on to test the look. I'm quite pleased so far.😁

Updated fingerboard. To be finessed significantly.
