Dedmans RD kustom

I was cruising through the PB site one night and came across this kustom kit that the factory had gotten wrong, the buyer had wanted a different veneer, I wasn't going to do any more builds this year but....I have a weakness for single pick up guitars and you know gotta have something to do on those days where it's cool enough to work in the garage. :p

It has a glue in bound neck, is fender scale, a single humbucker routing with the typical 3 holes for pots. There was the first issue. I don't need a 3 way switch on a single pick up ( I'm using a humbucker sized P90). So, I've filled the jack socket on the edge of the body and will run the jack in the end hole in the top and have the Vol and Tone as well. I had a gold Schaller tail piece in my pile of stuff so I ordered a matching bridge and have drilled the holes .A fair bit of glue refused to come off but I've managed to disguise it fairly well I think. Gold open back tuners are coming and I have a bone nut to go on and should all look good with the dark walnut stain.

Are you going to Walnut colour the neck and headstock?

yup Marcel,I just did the timbermate slurry on it this morning. Once I have the body and neck prepped and stained I'll glue in the neck before the clear coating.

nice score Dedman you have a good eye for them ! Love the neck even has binding and a mild spalt top and 1 bucker this should come up a treat. Think you got to admit you got GAS Dedman ! haha how many axes now ?
I would have gone for a lighter stain colour to show the patches of darker spalt you have

Gas? me? never! This is kit number 13, build number 14 (I did that semi scratch build) and will be guitar number 16 LOL still a LONG way behind you!

I came so close to buying that kit. Nice to see its gone to a good home.

mock build, still need to make a control cavity cover from brass, truss rod cover from brass,the actual tuners I'm using are still coming, the ones in the pic are some Chinese ones I hads same with the control knobs, some gold ones coming. Need to fit the nut before glueing the neck in. The some clear , some wiring and some playing :D

Thanks Nitro, I do plan stuff out in detail before I buy a kit, mostly to make sure I can get the parts I want and that they will fit or can be made to fit. The reason I had the Schaller bridge sitting around was that I'd rush bought it and hit the wrong item about a year ago. I figured I'd use it on a ES or Starcaster build one day but lets face it hollow bodies look better with a trapeze or a Bigsby so it found a home here.

This is the last guitar for a while however. I have a couple of basses planned for next year :o

Good to see you are planning to balance things out by adding a few Basses to your collection. Which ones did you have in mind?

a HB Bass, been meaning to do one for ages, and ........ something I kinda kustom/Frankensteined, but a suitable partner for the DM-1 (think single cut with a V head stock, ordered this ages ago)
But that won't be till after the worst of summer, then I'm off to Japan end of March early April to escape the Comm Games and do some oddity hunting and see some bands.

Glued the neck today, everything lined up nice.
Yesterday I made a brass control cavity cover and truss rod cover, they are currently in my brass tumbler ( used for cleaning ammunition cases) getting polished. Tuners have arrived, decided I may as well go with a brass nut as well, that's due tomorrow along with a Vitamin T capacitor. All going well, I should be able to start clear coating on Friday or Saturday.

Just a few quick questions dedman, im thinking of building a bass next like you, is there much difference compared to building a 6 string guitar?
What would you say would be the main differences?

no idea Nitro, I've never built a bass before either but I'm thinking the only difference is a longer neck and 2 less strings :P

Sounds good to me..lol

Got the final clear coats on today. Still need to fit the brass nut, do the final polish, polish the frets and wire her up.

after i look at the fine craftmanship in these threads, i enjoy checkin out the sheds, backyards. workshops, tools, ideas etc

Dual throne? Impressive but who would want to do a dual dump out in the back yard? Probably built in the late 60's or early 70's I suspect.

probably more like the 50s Waz, the place next door was one of the first houses in the street.

Anyway, nearly done. the brass nut I got was the wrong width so I put a plastic one in till I can get around to either sourcing a correct brass one or fitting a bone one O have here.More pics after it gets decent strings and I clean the finger prints off

Great to see someone actually building it.
I am still waiting on my replacement RD kit, hoping they get it right this time :-P
