Looks good, I didnt realise that the tuner holes were not drilled in them, that is some size paddle to play with...
So started on the neck and decided to go the full PRS with rosewood headstock plate. Found an outline on the Web and did a rough workout of tuner positions trying to get as close to straight strings to tuner as possible. The kit came with tulip style tuners that didnt quite suit so using a set of Gotohs instead. Once cut to shape and holes drilled, sanded off the maple veneer and thinned the headstock down a touch so that wouldnt be too thick once headplate attached. Cut headplate to roughly the shape.
And clamp overkill to make sure is glued well.
At this stage not 100% sure what colour to stain the body.
Will use the bridge and tailpiece that came with the kit so colour will need to match chrome hardware.
Planning to use a PRS-style faux-binding on the top?
Simon hadnt thought too but will have a look once I see how well the plate looks once unclamped
Had a chance to finally do some work on guitars and shaped and drilled holes in Headstock. Added a J-manesque/Nebular chamfer to the back of the headstock.
As for the body the wishful thinking is to achieve something similar to the pictured PRS.
Ooo Tony very nice !
Love the chamfer on the back of the head stock. What a wonderful feature lol......
The one good thing about these solid top kits is that if the colour doesn't turn out as planned you can safely sand back as the first photo. Have the base colour down and once dry will "sand" with 0000 wool to take the colour of the top a bit then repeat.
Rubbed back first attempt, hard to get consistent. Second photo with alcohol rubbed in.
Will repeat to darken the flame a bit and wool again.
That headstock looks really great. Liking the colour too
Nice job and kit, that blue looks like worn denim, i like it
Redid the stain and rubbed back again though not as far as the last time. Happy with where its at . Top will be stained and the back will be F&W Old Baltic stain. The side of the cap will be natural like binding - just have to work out the transition from area between the guitar horns to the sides as the cap is thick and tapers to the 5mm on sides.
Not sure how to finish as the steel wooling back has made this smooth as and probably no good for oil/dingotone style finish.
Looks very pretty!
Man, that colour really does looks super fine
So now having to take some time off good opportunity to catch up on all the projects that have been sitting.
So few scratches and dings from sitting around so sanded back again and have to recolour again.
The neck heal and body area is really awkward so need to scallop a bit and didn’t thing I’d have any way of clamping if scalloped before neck gluing so went ahead and glued in.
Thinking of leaving natural on the back and using a coat or two of tru oil to give a bit of colour and then maybe clearcoat.
What's the little routed area above the control cavity?
Also, thanks for posting after two years and not being finished...
I feel better about the two builds sitting in the shed. One of which was started last November. :o
Seems like they made a small placeholder for a different bridge??
It wasn't there originally (see initial photos at top of the thread) so it's something Tony's added. Maybe a location for a battery box if Tony's going for EMGs?
So started rasping to shape and managed to get it into a shape I am happy with and allows access comfortably for my hand.
Sanded ,sanded, sanded, sanded, reattached arm, sanded and sanded some more till she was ready to finish.
As I wanted to retain the cap un tinted on the side as a natural binding was a bit unsure wether to dye the top first or oil seal the side and body. Thought was easier to sand top back if any oil got on front over dye on the side so first coat of tru oil applied.
It is a pity these kits were too high a price point as the quality of the timber and manufacture/ fit is superb
That sort of Curve carve is why I started using the angle grinder. It’s a purely personal thing, I like the visual appeal of a concave cut in those areas.
The timber quality does look fantastic, how was it to work? And Ig0r wants to know if you stapled or superglued the arm back on, professional curiosity and what not.
Tend to agree on the concave with just the touch of a visible drop to start. If it wasn’t attached to the neck would have used the arbor tech blade but have not done enough practice with it to trust myself.
Timber is nice to work with and nice to have a full thickness flamed top easy to fix mistakes.
For the arm Stewmac 10 superglue, hold for 90secs good to go. It’s ok if your arms turning black though right?
First run of colour once dry will give a rub back see how it looks and if need be do again.
One side rubbed back and happy with that. Will pop with tru oil
Rubbed back and applied first coat of tru oil. Pretty stoked how it turned out.
That looks wonderful!
Great colour.
Nice! Has a real denim look to it.
And keep telling me about the old projects. It's good for my morale!
Headstock decal attached and ready to oil. Test run with tuners to see how it would look.
Real nice looking build. Good job.
Love the decal
So have finished all the oil costs and did a quick mock up but can’t make up mind on open pickups or the chrome. Polished up and ready for fret level and polish.
Yeah, that's a tough choice. At first glance I'd say the chrome, but I reckon I'd be happy with either option. Looking so good.
Looks great. I like both too. Sound quality might win the race here.
