Ok so I have a SGM-1 kit sat waiting for me to start, all mahogany
I am thinking of doing the coil switching stuff on the humbuckers and using push / push pots, the attached diagram shows these on the volume pots and all pots being Alpha ones...
Am I going the right way? .. the diagram right?... not even really sure why I am attempting this but putting it down to my learning curve.

Coil split diagram looks simple enough. I have only done it on a couple of builds that both had master volume & master tone, not a pair for each humbucker and the mod is worth the effort.
I would say that for me, coil splits on a humbucker work best when the humbucker is quite powerful to start with, as a single coil on a vintage PAF-style humbucker could have less than a 4k ohm resistance and so sounds quite weak on its own. A vintage style Strat neck/mid pickup will have at least a 5.6k resistance. Both types of pickup normally use the same 42 gauge wire, so the difference is in the number of winds.
Hotter pickups normally have both more powerful magnets and more wire turns, so the output when tapped goes up. Obviously it's still all relative to the full humbucker output, but at least it helps get the single coil output more into Strat territory.
The 500T/496R ceramic pickups that were originally in my Les Paul were certainly hot, but didn't sound that great at all clean - but the single coil sounds were quite decent. Now I've got Bare Knuckle Mules in it, the normal humbucker sound is great, but the single coil sounds are rather thin in comparison to the previous pickups.
To be honest why i am doing it i can only explain as the need to learn and progress a bit more, I will shortly have 2 different guitars with 2 humbuckers in, both have 2 volume & 2 tone.... so the next one will be a split I think to see for myself what difference it makes and also learn along the way.
The wonderful thing about doing these 'experiments' to an SG build is all the trickery pokery is behind a cover on the back of the body so there is no need to remove strings n stuff should you ever decide to change things again later. That's provided you have installed the 5 wire variety of PU's in the first place.
