Andy40's "The Robster" LP-1SS
Hi Guys, I've been commissioned by a good mate of mine "Rob" to build a Spalty LP Kit for him at cost.

Let me say he scored big time with the cap on this one!

Two things that need my attention..

The crack...Attachment 21999

and for some reason there is no spalted cap on the headstock.

So what are the Plans man...
- Grain pop with ebony timbermate
- DT Coolangatta Gold
- All black Hardware
- headstock veneer from my marquetry pack
- Grover mini rotomatics
- cut a bone nut from a blank
- all electrics will be upgraded
- and
- Andy's special hand wound pick ups!

Hi Andy, how is the PUP winding happening? Haven't seen any progress on your wife's build for quite a while either and wondering how things are coming along for her too.

Your mate is a lucky fella as not sure if these can be bought any more.

I read it as lobster as well, and wondered why it wasn't going to be red. Or that greeny-black colour that uncooked lobsters are.

Yes the wife's build is at a stand still.....its killing me!!!!!!

slowly working on the pup winding, there's a lot to read and I am fine tuning the pup winder.... I should have wound some strat pups and a few tele pups before doing the winds on this one ;)

This poor dude is going to be dead before I finish this build for him. Some more progress shots.
Fyi, it's grain filled with Ebony timber mate and stained Coolangatta gold with a true oil finish.
The kit did not have a spalted maple headstock veneer on so I chose some veneer for the headstock.

Looking killer mate! Great job. Gonna sound tight with those custom wounds [emoji3]

Super keen to understand your process for applying and sanding back the timbermate without going thru the veneer. What grits do you use and do you use a sanding sealer at all for a bit of insurance? Or maybe you wipe most of it off with damp cloth and just leave the grain filled without any/much sanding involved?

Nice question BD. First, the spalted maple is a little thicker than the flame veneers, so that helps.
Unless there are scratch marks or glue spots to contend with I do not sand the veneer prior to applying the timbermate.
My rules for sanding veneers are to use 320 grit (or 240 v e r y sparingly). its actually not easy to sand through the veneer with 320 or 360 grit.

Thanks mate. With scratches, that might get filled with timbermate unless dealt with, do you just sand them out as best you can? Kind of concentrate on those areas only? Do you thin the timbermate out and wipe on wipe off method?

Yeah thats right. If you use any coloured timbermate the scratches show up ridiculously well, even if you use neutral timbermate but stain the scratches will pop with the stain.

You got it, I just concentrate on lightly sanding the scratched area to blend in.

I forgot to mention, after timbermate has dried for 24 hrs, I sand the bulk off with 240 and then fine sand with 320 or 360. again carefully. sometimes I will sand the bulk off then wait a day to come back to the sanding, the main reason is because the first day I'm being super careful so I usually don't take enough timbermate off, when I come back the second day in the sunlight I can see how much more I can take off with without going through.:cool:
