Pablo's SGJM-1
New kit!! The lovely Mrs Pepper surprised me with a new kit for my birthday and she chose very well (with a little help, lol).

Juniors have always been my favourite SGs. Something about the minimal, no fuss attitude. Very punk.
Even though my birthday is not until next week, I had a sneaky peek. 'Just to make sure everything was there'. You know how it is...

It's all there and looks pretty damn nice. Neck is a tight fit. No twists or bows. Truss rod rattles when it's loose, but that's no big deal. There were a few scary crack sounds when testing the truss, but it was just the rod breaking free of a little glue and settling in(I hope), it functions well enough.

Open book headstock is pretty cool. A fraction lopsided, but easy to fix. The neck itself hasn't been carved perfectly, a few lumps and bumps left over, but once again, easy enough to remedy. Fretboard is very nicely figured.

Overall, very pleased. Looks great. Will be getting a few upgrades (bridge, pickup and electronics for now) and I really want to accentuate the carves and make it a little closer to proper shape.
Now, back in the box you go... Soon, my pretty.

good stuff Pabs kit looks great. So you and Ponch are building this kit ?
-
Yeah, I think I saw him say he was getting one.
-
Yay nice one Pabs - I also have same kit (b'day present) and it sounds like you have very similar plans to me. I'm just in the process of planning some extra carving on the curves as per original. But.. it is still queued behind the ES-5V that just keeps on battling with me ;)
-
Great to see you pushed the button on this one Pabs
-
That will be nice.. what ya got planned for this one Pabs???
-
Looks like a lovely kit. Enjoy the anticipation and try and have a great surprise when you unwrap it!

Great kit Pabs - well done to the Mrs. I'm very tempted by this one also. I love jnrs and this one would have to be the coolest of the lot!
cheers,
Gav.

A little progress. Got the revised pickguard worked out so I could start marking out the bevels.

Next comes the scary part of actually starting the carves. I figure if it all goes south I can just do solid white.
-
good work Pabs, you will be fine just don't file past the pencil line !
-
Good advice, bud. :D

Mate, that is a work of art even only half done.

Woke up early (for a Saturday) and got stuck in. About 90% there now.

A little refining and a ton of sanding to go. The end grain around the inner horns and 'hips' was a bit more trouble than I was expecting, a few small tear outs to deal with. But, happy with how it's turned out.

Nice job Pabs!

Weekend of dusty sanding fun. Body and neck grain filled, detail sanded up to 240. It's only now I have realised I haven't given colour any sort of real consideration. What to do?
I kinda just assumed I would go with classic heritage cherry

but, I have 3 red (or close to red) guitars now and I don't really want another one.
Other options are

Green

TV yellow

Blue.
I am digging the green or blue options as I think these will look good with either black or white pickguards. But, I'm a bit torn. Opinions?
-
Hey Pabs, you are the one that will have to decide on colour as everyone has different tastes. But I like all 3 options. What is the grain like is it worth staining ? If it's plain I like the blue
-
Like Woks says, each to their own - but I love that blue one!!
-
Nice shaping Pabs, Blue gets my vote. Thought of blue stain?
-
Blue gets my vote, then green

Soz guys, I am planning on staining. These pics are just a reference for my own brain to visualise the colours.
-
no worries Pabs, not sure if a blue or green stain will work as well on mahogany being quite a brown timber
-
Yeah, I was wondering how those colours would go, so I tested it out

Obviously, these aren't the exact shades I'm aiming for, but they both seem to work quite well.
-
Fido seems to prefer green.
cheers, Mark.
-
ok good one Pabs. The green stain looks better than the blue
-
-
I think green works better as a stain - my blue vote was more based on it as a solid colour (I'll be keeping that blue pic as a reference for a future build!!)
-
I'm not a green guitar fan. I really like the TV yellow style finish, but I do think SGs look best in heritage cherry.
-
The Bevel looks great Pabs.

-
good stuff Pabs it's a vibrant bright-ish green. Is that from the dye set you have used on your last tele ?
Pretty cool hanging method for a set neck !
-
It's the Incredible Hulk! That's one hell of a green, and while I'm not a green guitar person I really think it suits this build. Nice works Pabs
-
-
Nice one Pabs, the green stain has taken really well
-
A bit like Kermit the SG Junior.
Should look good with black trimmings.
-
Hulk lol. I guess, if the shoe fits...I'll have to make some torn purple shorts for it.
Headstock veneer decided it was gonna be uncooperative and get all splintery. Sad face.

Rather than sand it off and start again, I figured I'd try and patch it up with some slivers of veneer and superglue.

Took a few goes, but got there in the end. Not bad.
