oh oh the monochrome wood!
nice one Andy you have more than enough experience to have a crack at a scratch body. Is that pine ? What shape are you thinking of ?
Doesn't look quite thick enough for a guitar body (though it could be the camera angle), so are those pieces meant to be a figured cap on some other wood?
American white ash and it's going to be a tele
5cm thick at the moment I've got to thickness that down somewhat
So a lot bigger pieces than I thought. You could always make two very slim Teles from those instead of one standard-sized one.
Yep, so glad i bought a thicknesser, can't begin to tell you how much time that thing has saved me already.
Nice looking timber Andy, this Tele will look awesome
Squared and thicknessed

nice one Andy, did you buy a thicknesser ? what thickness you down to about 40-42mm is good. How exciting is it building your first scratch body axe !
Yowsa! looking forward to seeing this one kick along!
I'd love to get one but it seems to get anything decent costs a fair bit - which model do you have?
And how did you do yours Andy?
In the past I've got the guys at Anagote - my favourite purveyor of wood stuff - to do it when I purchased timber. Now I've got a couple of pine blanks that I wish I could do easily.
Very, very exciting Wokks.
Pabs put me onto this place that has industrial machines you hire for time. They teach you how to do it too.
I used their machine to plane and thickness the blanks, (yep Wokks 42mm). I was also taught how to do it too without losing a hand.:o
Wow - that is so cool. I'll have to find out if there's one near me!! And looking forward to the build - I'm guessing the "semi" part means you'll grab a neck rather than make one? Certainly makes it a lot simpler in my mind. I've built a couple of necks but never enjoyed the process the same way I enjoy the rest of the build.
AH Anagote. All of my Maple stock (Sadly depleted) and the Wenge and Beech I am working with came from them. Though the mahogany i got from Crescent Timber and Hardware.
The Thicknesser i bought is the 13" Carbatec Spiral head unit. It wasn't cheap, but i feel it was worth the money.
It goes really well It whizzed through Rock Maple, Wenge and some African Mahogany, it won't notice Pine. I still actually have to set up a separate bench for it but its compact enough that it can be man handled up onto my existing workbench.
If you are around the Inner west then admission to the FrankenLab can be negotiated just PM me.
That's a very generous offer that I would be very excited to take you up on! It'll make getting back in the saddle for the I'll PM shortly. Gotta dig this community.
EDIT: that sentence should read: It'll make getting back in the saddle for the scratch build that died much easier!
hey Chuck, entry to the Franken lab would be at least a 6 pack Franky ?
A good friend of mine told me about a place in Darwin called the Pensioner's Workshop where pensioners can pay to use the tools in the workshop to work on woodworking projects, I thought that it was a pretty cool idea and hopefully one day I'll go there to work on building a 2 X 12 speaker cab.
Looking great so far, so are you going to go with a transparent or opaque finish Andy40?, the wood's got a nice grain pattern to it which'd look great with a translucent finish.
That reminds me, I still need to order that 51 Tele kit that I want to get, so I'll plan on ordering it in November this year.
Yes, its beautiful, the photo doesn't do it justice.
I have a set of DT colourless finish for this bad boy
nice grain Andy, would look awesome natural or a light stain colour I reckon !
So are you routing the tele shape with a template or cutting it with jigsaw/bandsaw ?
How will the F hole work ? Will you semi hollow out that area and glue a drop top on ?
Specially trained woodworm?
ha ha, yeah i was toying with the idea like FW suggested
Photo update. Sorry I've been a bit too busy to post on the forum for a while

Good set up Andy, nice and tidy work on the cavity routs.
thanks FW, hat off to Pabs's template for that, but I royally muffed the neck pocket. I'll need to shim it
Yeah I'm nutting out some oversize templates for the neck and the body sides on the silent build. Kinda paranoid about screwing that up.
Stunning end grain Andy. Looks like Ash?
Thanks Waz, its American White Ash. I'm going DT colourless on it.
Hey Andy40, the Tele is coming along pretty nicely, I see why you're going with a colourless Dingotone finish on it, nice grain pattern, can't wait to see it all finished cause I reckon it'll look really nice.
coming along well Andy, bet you have learnt a heap so far. The end grain cleaned up nicely, well done
