the way I treat the laminated tops is to not sand them at all. Wipe down with a damp rag to find any glue spots, remove the glue with Goof Off and elbow grease. You can pop the grain with a very diluted slurry of timbermate in black or a dark brown sand that VERY lightly with 800 or 1000 grit .Stain your top to taste, then use multiple coats of clear to fill the grain. I've used both auto acrylic and TO with equal success ( not on the same guitar) as to the end finish. the main difference being TO is slightly yellowish
