ES-2V (pitbull build #4)

Hi Everyone!

Always wanted a hollow body. I struggled for ages between the ES-1 and the ES-2V.

Having been super inspired by the awesome ES-2v builds of deadman, gavin and neverwas (http://www.buildyourownguitar.com.au...ead.php?t=2663) , I have hit the magic button and ordered my very own today.

Am quite concerned about gluing the neck in and hope that looking through other build diaries I can learn something.

But for now I am quite curious about finishing the veneer top and will use this time between order and delivery to fill my brain with smart stuff on how to get it right.

yeah mate.....end of june. another lap around the sun.
got two great prezzies.
1. an ES-2v and
2. a road trip with the boys. hooning round country roads on the bikes and staying in country pubs.

Nice kit man, you're going to love it. One of my first builds once my workshop is back will be to replace my 2V. I loved playing that thing. Looking forward to seeing what you do with yours.

Hi all

thinking about a clear tung oil coat on the top and a tobacco colour stain topped with tung oil on the back

any suggestions for a grain filler for the top and back?
should i get a really light grain filler or one with some brown tone?

Mind you; I have just learned from this forum you need polymerized Tung oil otherwise you won't get that glossy look.

I used regular Tung oil on my guitar but that doesn't do anything but being soaked up by the wood...

A very slow start to this kit.
Ive decided on tung oil finish all over. and a darker stain on the back of the guitar. neck staying natural all over.

it is hard getting a clean space to work when your home is a construction zone....phew!!

Ive been looking at heaps of stuff but am a little concerned with getting analysis paralysis.............can anyone point me to a good diary with guidance on how to do the laminate guitar top ?????

I really like the pattern on the headstock.

the way I treat the laminated tops is to not sand them at all. Wipe down with a damp rag to find any glue spots, remove the glue with Goof Off and elbow grease. You can pop the grain with a very diluted slurry of timbermate in black or a dark brown sand that VERY lightly with 800 or 1000 grit .Stain your top to taste, then use multiple coats of clear to fill the grain. I've used both auto acrylic and TO with equal success ( not on the same guitar) as to the end finish. the main difference being TO is slightly yellowish

thanks so much man....that was the way that I was leaning and it is good to see that youve been successful with it also.
a little nervous about applying any abrasive to the laminate.
I really like applying the tung oil with 1000 grit wet and dry. there is something special about sanding the oil in...

That's a shame. But is the headstock itself symmetrical about the centre line and one set of holes have been badly drilled, or are the holes correct and it's just one edge of the headstock that needs some attention?

Just checked mine its a bit the same there could be 2,3mm in the curve depends on where u measure, it shouldnt effect it to much only the look

Man, what a bummer the Chinese factory QC isn't just a bit better than that.

On nearly every kit of mine the tuner holes have never lined up or spacing has been slightly out. Minor irritation most of the time and thankfully still functional. Just pass it off as adding to the DIY guitar building thing if anybody notices or asks.

Hey guys.
The body is still in a box under my bed. Since the house is a construction zone at present I have no place to spread out.
The quilt is nice. It since the mock build I've not looked again!

Re the tuning key holes I think I'll get a sanding wheel for the dremmel and take a few mm off the left side. It's driving m crazy (doh!)

I'm away for the next three days on a road trip so won't try anything for a week or so.
Gives me time to contemplate options.
