welcome to the forum Tom. Kit looks great. What are the plans for the build, stain or paint ? what colour you got in mind ? Any hardware upgrades ?
Always loved the Rickenbacker basses! Welcome and enjoy the build :)
Hi Tom and welcome. I've got family just a bit south of you in Cramlington. Good luck with your build.
Hi Tom, welcome.
From you profile pic it looks like you may have a little helper to give you a hand putting this together?
Cheers, Waz
Thanks all for the welcome. To reply to all, yes Crammy is just down the road Simon, going to build and upgrade bridge and I've always wanted an ashtray bridge cover and see how things sound before upgrading wok about and unfortunately that was a bit since and josh is 15 now wazkelly! Done a loooottt of sanding staining and piling so far but loving every minute!!
Hi Tom, glad to have you on the forum. Can't wait to see how this turns out.

put ashtray bridge cover on, stained, sanded, oiled, sanded, stained, oiled, sanded, sanded and got a lovely finish. Also stained and waxed the finger board - now for buffing!
Looks good in a natural finish.

Necks looking nice - can't wait for everything to be dry to start assembling!
The natural finish is so sweet - brings back memories of my first 4001, a '79. And that's some great figuring on the neck. You're doing a great job Tom!
Great job Tom and what a beautiful neck! Scored well there.
Great looking neck.
How the hell do you achieve that much in 4 days!!
Very nice :)

Body and neck done - looking forward to getting stuck into the fingerboard today and then neck glueing!

Well the neck is on and I've put the machine heads on to try and align the bridge. Every stage is getting a little high pressure now - bit worried about getting the bridge on aligned and the right distance!
I used Titebond Liquid Hide Glue on the neck - I clamped for 30 hours but the 'squeeze out' still feels a little gummy - is this normal? the neck feels solid enough.
great work Tom - after 30 hours of clamping neck should be fine.
thanks Stan.
That hide glue has a limited shelf life (12-18 months if unopened, less after first use). There should be an expiration date on the bottle, so check that. You never know how long its sat on a stockist's shelf. I bought some a while back without realising this, so will probably need to get some more. If that date is close or has gone past, you might want to see if you can gently pull the joint apart. If you can't, it's probably fine (might be worth leaving it alone for a couple of days to really dry out before putting any real pressure on it). If you can move it, then it's time to pull it apart, clean out the join and re-glue it.
Alternatively (and probably a better idea than trying the join on the bass), use the glue to join a couple of pieces of scrap wood together. Clamp it for 24 hours and then test the join. If that's solid, then the bass neck joint will be. If it moves, it's time to redo the join. But as long as the glue is in date and hasn't sat around for too long if previously opened you should be OK. Web searching seems to suggest that as it gets older it takes longer to dry, so you might want to wait until the squeeze-out has hardened (easier to remove if not set fully, but put it to one side if you can and keep an eye on it).
excellent ta - Have glued some wood to test; in the meantime the glue on the guitar seems to have hardened a fair bit - there is no date on the glue so hoping the experiment gives me some confidence! cheers again
Just to let you know Simon, I glued 2 offcuts of wood together as suggested and clamped for 24 hours - the glue was so strong that the whilst trying everything to pull them apart, the wood eventually snapped but the joint remained rock solid! success!! thanks again.
Good news! You can now relax.
