Saw this today thought you might need some inspiration Woks
wokks likes big - he'd make it from tree trunks...
Not a guitar but the stock on this was made from a pallet, the rifle was a scratch build with the breech & firing mechanism being a commercial product.
( the builder made the early metal storm prototypes for the designer )

haha cheers KB, I saw this on FB, I like the effect of the different pine end grain making a cool pattern.
at 4D we never say never so who knows, might give a similar axe a crack !
You would want to carefully clamp it when you glued it together!
Hey Frankie I emailed the pic to my 4D buddy Popeye and he replied 'we are building THAT' so looks like its a project to start FDF - Four Dee Friday hahaha
I'll get dressed pine lengths from the green shed (maybe a new selfy) and chop to about 42mm lengths on the drop saw, glue together and a heap of sanding to get it flat !!
what shape shall we do ? LP, ST, SG, Tele ?
I quite like the look of the tele !
should be able to line up the pieces with 4 long straight pieces clamped on the edges holding it together
I vote SG or IB-1, the IB profiled sides or the SG chamfer would wicked with all the grain patterns.
Edit: You and Popeye are an inspiration. I can see my Better Half ripping out the "If Wokka and Popeye jumped off a cliff would you jump too?!?!" in the near future!
cheers for the suggestions Frankie and Zandit.
I agree some sort of profiling or chamfering will make the grain look cool.
we'll wait till we have the body blank sanded flat and make a decision then.
Damn you KB you and your ideas, as if we haven't got enough projects on the table haha
haha good point Frankie, Popeye and I have been mates for over 25 years so the missus often jokes he is my other half haha
The stock of the gun I posted earlier was made from a play pallet bearer which is why what appears to be grain is so prominent.
So my vote would be for some kind of offset guitar
cool cheers for the suggestion DK !
there can be some nice grain in pine
Here's how to do it for a cutting board...

Butchers Block Axe - now that would be something different.
Tele for sure, they seem to be a great body shape for oddments wood styles...
And consider a strap clamp for holding it together, done right you could glue it up complete rather than in sections...
LP Jnr!!!
It would look fantastic with a transparent blond, white or Yellow finish.
Gahhh! A guitar body that is all end grain! I'm having palpitations..
cheers,
Gav.
cheers for the ideas everyone. After watching the chopping block video the end grain is going to be harder to sand and shape but I think it should still be pretty easy being pine.
Cheers for the video Bman. As I haven't got all the machinery he has I'll be finding an easier method and using a breadboard clamping jig we made and clamps and flat wood pieces on the other 2 sides to clamp the matrix together.
Will try and make a start Friday night
Like this?....

that looks hot Fretty, will try and get some knotty pine !
Wait for the look you get when you tell the timber guy you're looking for knotty lengths, "umm you want knots? Are you sure? 'cos you'd be the first!"
haha I hear you Weirdy. If there are too many knots I will be handballing it to Popeye to sand flat bwahahahhaha
Due to visit my bro later this year - he was keen to make a breadboard this way with me. I might make 2 and one might not quite be right and might need some more work :).
ok got the pine pieces cut lastnight. It's photo we placed them on our chopping board jig and got them arranged how the patterns look good. 2nd pic clamped all sides. Last pic how the raw blank looks !
The pieces moved a bit while the glue was drying so got a fair bit of sanding to do. We got a circle pattern bottom centre should be a feature with a knot in the centre.
At this stage firat one will probably be a tele shape to see how it looks. Next one we will do some more shaping. Might put a nice elbow cut on it, will see how the grain looks.
I'll post some pics once its sanded flat. Hope to get the rough body shape cut and maybe the neck pocket routed too.
Jeez I go away for two days and the inspiration starts to turn into a guitar. Woks I can see I'm going to have to find harder projects for you buddy lol. Looking great Woks
Best wishes
Kimball
Cheers KB. I started sanding it flat it's going to take a while! I better chill some beer haha
Beers the magic ingredient Woks have you tried to use as finish. No I don't mean spilling it all over surface when drinking lol.
Haha yeah KB beer makes average jobs more fun! Won't be using a beer finish unless someone leaves corona haha
got a bit more done todaz. Got a very rough sand so I could cut the rough tele shape. There's a pic before it got butchered by the bandsaw. Now I will route the neck pocket and finish cutting the shape and sand the rest flat. Fun times. Got a spare rosewood strat neck to use. The headstock shape is still a paddle so can decide the headstock shape. I might order a black hardware kit for it. I'll post some comparison pics with chrome and black hardware later
That's very cool!
cheers Bill. My offsider Popeye knows when not to be here when so much sanding is required haha
Popeye's not silly!
got a bit more done lastnight and 'stole' Popeye's spare reverse headstock rosewood strat neck. I will replace it for him ! I plan to try and cut thin end grain veneers to glue to the headstock to complete the look !
I was a busy boy, also got first coat of bushfire sunset on the jazz bass, will post some pics of that when I get the second coat on, in that build diary.
Here's a couple more angles.
The plan this arvo is to sand the tele body flat, get the sides cleaned up and route both pup cavities and control cavity. Love working with pine its so soft and easy to work with !
Looking good Wokks. I wonder how it would go with a rear rout for the controls and a 3-way toggle instead of a lever switch.
cheers Weirdy. Not a bad idea I might consider rear control cavity so the control plate doesn't cover the grain. Then just cut a similar shape control cover for the back.
When I zoom in on the pics, all those swirls make me feel dizzy just looking at it!
Great job Woks and also reverse headstock Tele :)
cheers Ponch. Got a heap more done yesterday, sanded fairly flat, cleaned up the sides, routed both pup cavities, drilled holes for wires and routed the control cavity from the rear. Also cut some thin pine veneers and glued to the headstock. Still going to reshape the headstock. Here's some pics.
I also got 2nd coat of bushfire sunset on the jazz bass
here's some more pics of the cavities
