First radio appearance!

Possibly not the right sub forum for this topic, but I thought I would share a couple of photos from Sunday night when I performed with a number of other local Country artists on a small regional radio station!

The show went for about 3hrs, and it was streamed online over on the Mainland, as well as internationally. I seriously doubt the international audience is that big, but we did receive some comments from Newcastle.

If anyone is interested, I will be receiving an MP3 copy of the broadcast that I can share. Let me know if there is any interest.

This was a truly "Unplugged" affair, with only the studio mics you see in the photos available for us to record with, and luckily we didn't need any 7-second delay or beeper for coarse language, because that wasn't available!!

I sang a total of 7 songs for the night, and from all accounts, the entire night went over extremely well, and they want to try doing something like this every month. Apparently the station owner/manager rang up towards the end of the program, and said it was the best live show that he had heard on the station in over 30yrs!

It was such a great night with a crazy bunch of people. If you enjoy a wide variety of country music, you may enjoy the recording.

At this stage, I haven't gotten that far, but it is certainly something to keep in mind, thanks again.
I've only gotten back into singing publicly over the last 18mths since my niece asked me to play for her bridal waltz. After that, my Dad introduced to some friends of his(one of which was Mick in the picture above) and the rest has been a whirlwind of shows, charity events and huge jam sessions.
I never did much before that, and only had a small repertoire of songs under my belt. My song selection was mostly ballads, and everyone who listened were happy to just sit there and listen, while all of the other artists was getting people up on the dance floor regularly. It took a while to get used to that, but when I learned that people were getting lost in the songs, I felt so much better for it.

I think to make it easier, I'll post the share link here in this thread so anyone who is interested can grab it at their leisure.

I haven't looked into it.

To get it to fit, you might need to sign up to Soundcloud's Pro Membership option, since the other two membership options they offer limit your song-playing time to around two hours, or so.

Thanks for the info Doc, I'm not very well versed in splitting tracks etc, but that may have already been taken care of. I have no idea how the recording has been finalised. It may be split into our various "sets" as we all did 2 or 3 songs each the rotated to the next singer.

The radio station that I do a spot for streams the show and is available on demand until overwritten by the same timeslot the following week. ( except for this week by the looks of it other I would have shared the link :( )

This week I featured a Neil Murray track and next week it will be an early Ted Egan song, the show is Australian indie country but I am given room to move for my King's Pick, last week it was Brandy Clark with Marty Stuart doing Take A Little Pill as a nod to those suffering depression and needing help.

Look this Brandy Clark song up on YT it is great and carries a very strong message

Marty's Telecaster is Clarence, the B Bender owned by Clarence White of the Byrds and both he and Kenny Vaughan are brilliant players, check Kenny and his band out on YT he covers a lot more territory than country

Haha, that sounds like a fantastic idea Greg. One problem I see straight away. DB has been banned from visiting Tassie. He keeps on trying to steal all of our beautiful Huon Pine and Black Heart Sassafras! He was caught trying to bribe the sniffer dogs with treats!!!

In regards to other talents, I can play the Trombone. I'm currently trying to play lead trom in the Ulverstone Municipal Brass Band, but I'm struggling a little at the moment. I'm normally playing Bass trombone, so not only have I switched from reading Bass Clef to Treble Clef, I'm also trying to hit much higher notes than I ever used to before, so I'm busting my lip pretty often during practice. We had a performance at a school fair last Sunday(before this radio appearance, so it was a full day for me!) and I almost got through the whole day before my top lip went numb, and I couldn't hit those top notes.
A little trivia for you, I don't use sheet music or TAB when playing guitar. I do most of it by ear, or watching videos on YouTube if I can't figure out a chord!

Apart from that, I can't talk about some of my other talents, gotta keep it PG!!!

Switching between clefs can be fun.

Many years ago my band did a lot of backing of artists in floor shows which required reading the dots and at the time I was playing bass and studying classical violin, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to know where the first song ended up.

Nice vocals and guitar playing. Not so hillbilly redneck country as a lot of Nashville stuff can be and found the songs enjoyable given that most of my tastes lean more towards dominant guitar based with lots of overdrive, and usually played through a Marshall.

Since I'm from the younger generation among the other singers, my style stands out the most I guess. Country music is no longer "3 Chords and the Truth" as they so often sing about, and Mick Wilson loves accompanying me, as I have many more chords thrown into my songs.
Mick is also an extremely good Pedal Steel player, reportedly one of the best in Australia. If I'm able to find some clean sounding video footage for you, I'll share it.

Cheers mate. Country has come a long way and I quite some Keith Urban as that has a harder Rock edge to it.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of Keith Urban, and I'll be seeing him live in December in Melbourne. This will be about the 6th time we have seen him live!
I haven't been a fan of his last few albums. There is only about 5-6 songs I like on his latest album, where I would be lucky to find only one or two songs I didn't like on his earlier ones.

OK. I don't have any of his albums, just heard a few songs here and there and really enjoyed his performance at the NRL Grand Final which made Ritchie Sambora look a right proper goose singing out of tune and relying on his girlfriend Orianthi to play his Bon Jovi lead solos. Extremely poor effort, nearly as bad as Meatloaf at the AFL Grand Final a few years back.

I hope you got to listen in Daniel, I gave Whiskey & You a run on the show today and it's now up on Bob's FB page.

The station footprint only covers the south western Sydney area but has streaming listeners all over the world.

I'll see if I can get copy of the segment for you, we actually spent a fair bit of time talking about Indies and wondering why the mainstream media continues to ignore this huge well of talent that lies not beneath but in plain sight particularly those who have won new talent awards at Tamworth.

That would be awesome Dave, would love to have a listen to the show.
As I mentioned, I have only been getting back into the shows and stuff over the last year or so, and I find myself in a bit of a unique position. At 99% of the gigs I play at, I'm the youngest one singing there, and I'm not talking by a small margin, the nearest one in age to me would have about 16yrs on me. This puts me in a different generation I guess, and a different mind set in the music I choose.
Apart from a couple of songs, I mostly sing songs that have some meaning to me, and not necessarily popular. More often than not, they are the last songs on an album(The B side I guess you could say) and are rarely released hits.
Whether that classes me as Indie, I don't know, but I'm certainly left of center!
Growing up playing the trombone, doing solos and group/band music, I had a different feeling for the music I started playing on the guitar. Whenever I got up to sing at a gig, I would ask the "house band" to take a break, and get up there by myself. I never played the old country songs that were "3 chords & the truth" so most of the time, I would lose the guys by throwing in different chords that they weren't used to, and heaven forbid if I pulled out the capo!!
Drummers especially would have trouble when I was playing ballads, as I would change up the tempo occasionally and they would stumble.
Getting together with the guys I have been playing with over the last year has been awesome. They understand how the industry has changed, and they have a broader idea of the different eras of country music, and adapt extremely quickly.
It's been a great 12-18mths!

To Bob and I in those we select to play, the music must be interesting and we both lean heavily towards the lyrics ( Bob has a masters in English and is a published playwrite)

Country music is many things to many people, I was talking to my band mates about what we are recording at the moment and it doesn't fit any current genre we call ourselves country & rockabilly but the current stuff sits more in the vein of early 60s pop ballard along the lines of Ricky Nelson and Dion.

It's not a country sound from any era so maybe there is a spot in the market for a trio of old farts :)

I can't share anything because we haven't got it protected through APRA yet
