HB build #3. Acoustic refurbish...Steam Punk Resonator Semi Scratch Build.

This Canora was my first ever guitar, got it for my 16th Birthday...It was a semi acoustic and served me well..A while ago I was going to refurbish it back to bear wood and stain it. However once I stripped it realized it was a cheap veneer that covered it and made out of PLY, so the stain didn't take, I then tried Spraying it but looked Horrible hence the sate of it now...So I am going to turn it into a Resonator guitar..I wont use a resonator kit but will home make it..

Plan.

1. Old but loved acoustic guitar.
2. Nut made from a bolt.I'm thinking Brass
3. Will use existing bridge and glue it to a piece of Tassie Oak, this will sit on the resonators cone top.
4. Home made floating tail piece...Not sure how but will see.
5. Tuners from Hammer of the Gods Les Paul build as going to order Gold Hardware for that build from PBG.
6. Recycle neck Humbucker , electronics from 'Hammer' so can wire it up for 'Dirty Delta" sound.
7. Resonator cone made from cake tin. Make internal Baffle with thin ply. As well as sound hole supports.
8. Sound hole covered in wire mesh..Be from rubbish somewhere, but will change over time.
9.Resonator ring made from MDF. I only have a jigsaw and cant cut solid timber.
10.Will place a fake ply top over existing top and do a faux contour body.
11. The finish will be spray it with contact adhesive and cover in Aluminium foil.
12. Spray in Satin Acrylic. Buff and polish

Sanding back used a hand held detail sander. 80 grit. The best tool I got, gets into the corners etc.

It was everything..Paint ...Paint..I originally just randomly cut out the sound hole without thinking about the size etc. Then sanded the top… Then I realized why not just remove the entire top and replace with new top so won’t be restricted by hole location etc. As the guitar itself is cheap ply , the top doesn’t need to be fancy tone wood, so will just use a ply top.

Dude! Thats hectic, how does th neck fit to the guitar, was it across the top or was the top fitted around it?

Most necks are fitted with a dovetail join or bolted on. There's normally glue been the fret board and the top of the acoustic body. Some high end designs feature a floating fret board, but you don't see it very often.

Will post a photo, but the guitar was built with set neck then ply top added on, then the fretboard glued on.. Once I post the photos of the progress, you will think "Why is this guy Such a Cowboy???' This build is kind of a homage to home built, the concept of recycling, using crap laying around etc..Like a cigar box, crazy White Strips deal BUT based on alot of reading and research on Dobros and resonators and acoustic baffles and.....Basically a funky left of centre build. As I dont have any real tools I use what I can will follow up with my techniques.. Inspired by that great SBS doco Bush Mechanics.

Heres a photo of the underside of the fret board, it estends beyond the heel, I am removing the residual ply, so the new top will the glue to thew board. The new top will be 3mm Play.
