IB-1 Build

Well, I have gotten started on my 2nd build an IB-1. Finally finished the surface prep, doing a transparent finish so spent a lot of time sanding end grain (I love sanding, yay) and it is all ready to start the staining process.

So far so good, I think another coat of green to bring it up a little more and I will get to staining the back and sides. Going with green for them too, might add a little black to get them a little darker than the top though. Anyway that's it for now, I'll catch you all later.

So, made a little more progress. The photo doesn't do the colour justice, it is more emerald green than it appears in the photo.

Scraped the top of the binding and hit it with a coat of sanding sealer.

More updates to come but for now it is time to watch sealer dry, take it easy everyone.

ooooh minty! I have one of these in mind for later.

looks great Mulldoe, you even stained all the visible areas some people forget to.
I think another coat the green on the cap would look better a bit darker.
Nice work on all the prep, it will pay off !

A quick sand of the sealer and then shot the first coat of the shiny stuff, I am using polyurethane for this.

Alright, a few more coats of clear, a fine wet sand, a good going over with a rubbing compound followed by a lot of polishing, buffing and a coat of wax and I am starting to get that dipped in glass finish. Not too bad for a rattle can job I reckon.

Had a bit of a setback with the headstock, not sure if something dripped on it but a couple of spots were rejecting the clear coat. I think I have it sorted now but it definitely slowed the job.

Finished installing the electrics and got a good tip for any new builders, when you do your mock build check everything. Turns out the jack collet was too big to fit into the port on the front of the guitar, it also wasn't long enough to get thread through to the controls cavity. I ended up filing down the collet on the jack and drilling/chiselling a recess into the control cavity to get it all installed. I got it all done with no problems but it would have been easier if I didn't have to worry about damaging the finish.

Still sorting out the problem with the machine head, but once that is done I just need to oil the neck, give it a fret job and do the final assembly.

Get close to time for a shred now, got a couple of coats of what may or may not be a particular type gun stock oil.....

Hey Mulldoe don't rush the assembly, give the TO at least 2-3 weeks final curing - it is worth the wait for it to fully harden before you start polishing and assembling

A three week stretch in the NW for using poo oil should give it enough time to cure :p

Otherwise, that is looking schweeeeeeeet!

I am so tempted looking at this kit to just go and plonk some cash down. Either this or the SV kit. Dagnabit! Thats another two builds in the plotting now!

Cheers for the advice wokka and db, I am going for a satin finish on the neck and in my experience with t/o about a week is enough time before a hit with steel wool........if it is in low humidity. So that said, fret job.

Tuned and set the trem on this to c# for those nice thumping metal tones, and I gotta say, it sounds pretty sweet. Anyway, cheers for following along all.

Yeah, I understand that, I only have a little practice amp and some basic software. it doesn't do great things for audio quality.
Worst of all for my sound demo will be me playing, Horrors!!
