#3 LP Jr Build

This was from the DIY Guitars clearance. I like the simplicity of a slab of wood with a non-wobble bridge and a pair of P90s. Don't really have any plans. I still have Black Stump and Bondi Blue DT unused from my first builds. Not sure about how the blue will go on the mahogany though.

This piece on the side of the body is in stark contrast to the rest.

There are a few glue spots which seems a bit strange for a body with no binding or veneer so I've already applied goof off.

Neck appears to fit snuggly, however seems like you could drive a bus under the strings. This is my first set neck, is this something I need to sort out now?

Have you got the bridge posts in the body for the mock build?

Hi Andrew, yeah the bridge posts are in... sort of. I bought a Gotoh bridge for another kit and the posts are just slightly smaller than the drilled holes in these kit guitars so they slide right in... and out. I'll use the ones with the kit when actually putting it together.

Ah ok. There could be 3x factors at play here. High nut, neck set too low and bridge post setting. The nut can be adjusted later but it's important to get the neck set correctly upfront.

One way to test the neck height is to run an edge of a straight rule along the centre of the fretboard over the bridge. If all is well the edge of the rule should just touch the top of the bridge. Give this a try and let me know. Pictures will also help

Note for this style of axe I have the bridge and tail bushings flush with the guitar face, seems to help things but you'll need to check in this circumstance

This should look good when its finished and you shouldnt have too much trouble getting that action right.

I am a fan of the Junior Special with the double cut and a single bridge pickup.

I have an Agile 2200 here that i bought as a sort of cross over between a LPJunior and a Gretch Corvette. Even the Korean P90's sound good in it, but i put a Kent Armstrong Rory Gallagher P90 in the bridge and the difference was amazing.

I looked up the Agile 2200 on Google. That's a nice looking guitar. I wasn't planning on a red finish... but that guitar makes a pretty strong argument. I guess there's just something about a pair of black soapbars on a red body...

This is my Modern Player Jaguar. Made in China. Can't stay in tune and the low E string falls off the edge of the fretboard. Still, it's my favourite guitar. The stock pickups sound so good I've been hesitant to fix what isn't broken. So this build will be my test bed for a pair of p90 upgrades.

The Jaguar looks good, i like offset guitars alot, i have a blacktop Jazzmaster here i have collected cheap parts for i need to put together.

Heres my Agile 2200, it blends from a blonde to Red to a nearly brown because of the 3 piece Mahogany, it looks nice really up close and plays great. I got the guitar very cheap because of the finish, you dont play the finish haha

So after going over Andrew's advice, I realised a couple of things wrong with my mock build:

• The neck was not straight
• The Gotoh bridge bushings I was using (that are too small for the holes in the guitar) are also too tall and slightly rising up out of the holes in the guitar.

So I had another go, this time with no bushings just the posts resting in the holes. Also straightened the neck with a notched straight edge. Thanks again to Andrew for the advice.

Now that looks awesome. I think yours is even better than the red finish. And I'm with you on not playing the finish, I actually prefer used guitars with some dings or otherwise imperfect finishes. Means you can get on with the business of playing the thing and not care about adding 'character' to it. One of my other guitars is a Les Paul Standard DC Plus. Very nice guitar. Very Pretty. Has spent most of its life in a wardrobe.

Me as well, i want a LP junior Special single pup in TV yellow, makes note again for future project.

being mahogany browns, reds look good, maybe you could do a red/brown/black burst would be cool

there are 3 DT reds to choose, bushfire sunrise is the lightest, that would look great in the centre of the burst, then nullarbor ochre, then use your black stump for the edges

I like the TV yellow too, but since I'll be using Dingotone, I'm not sure about yellow (Coolangatta Gold?) on Mahogany.

I think you're onto something here Wokka. This might be the way to go. I read DB's post today about Dingotone MKII, so I'm holding out for the new batch.

Funnily, I have a TV yellow on the list of colours to make....... Guess I will have to make it now
