nice video DB and Clarry was a pain ! Picked up some good tips especially using the square edge to sand down the height.
Look forward to more 'how to' DB vids now you got your new gopro
Thanks DB, some very good tips on bone nut fitting.
I'll have to order a new one first....
(Note to Self - Do not drop the new one)
That Galah cracks me up! Also DB the title is "Untitled"
Cool vid DB
Clarence is a star.
Nice work DB and Clarence. Clear concise and o the point. A great tutorial.
cheers,
Gav.
Just in time! :) looking forward to installing mine
Great work DB and Clarry! Sorry DB, but Clarry stole the show.
Can I put this on the PBG YouTube Channel?
Clarry always steals the show :p
Yhep, no worries with that Adam :)
Great to see Clarry checks your work on a regular basis. QC is amazing lol
Thanks Phil great video. I still have sooo much to learn.
I cut my bone nuts so that they fit really tight and don't move, and don't bother gluing them and let string tension hold them in place. Is this No-No?
rob
I believe that doing that is fine, as long as it doesn't move. Glueing it in is of course a much more stable option, but if its fully snug then it should be fine.
great stuff Clarry, nice of you to let DB be in the vid
could have done with this before i filed out the nut slots instead of the nut on both my kits doh
Looks like Clarry wanted to be the centre of attention, thanks for showing us how you fit bone nuts, will make a mental note of this for future reference....cheers.
why do i have an avatar all of a sudden?
i remembered that i filed the top of the nut slot, leaving the bottom side intact, phew
Old thread, but in the video DB mentions you can polish the top of the nut...
How do you do this without making the nut slots shallower?
Ultra fine sandpaper / polishing pads - something like: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-Mesh-...YAAOxydlFS6p23
You don't need the nut slots particularly deep. Especially on the two outer slots where deep slots mean you have two thin pieces of nut sticking up on the outside. If you then catch the edge of the nut on something, the extra depth means extra leverage and the end of the nut is more likely to break off. So file down the top of the nut until the slots are just deep enough.
Some say the nut slots only need to be half the diameter of the string deep. Whilst this might be OK with really heavy gauge strings and a jazz style where you don't bend the strings, for me this doesn't work well on a guitar with 0.009" and 0.010" sets and the strings pop out of the slots, so I try for the full string depth and no more.
It doesn't take much polishing with Micromesh to get the top and the headstock side of the nut bright and shiny. Always mask off all around the nut with a double thickness of tape before doing this. You'll also want to round off the edges (except the fretboard facing edges) with a small file first before polishing. You don't want sharp corners digging into your hands.
You can go a bit further with the polishing and use a metal polish or cutting compound for some extra shine after the 12000 grit Micromesh.
