excess glue on the flame maple veneer?

Hi there, thanks for looking at my post.ive had a little trouble dying the flame top with ink dye.....probably not the best method but it has a very good range of colors. All went well except for the centre line. The dye didnt take. I was wondering if you could have a look at my picture of my lp-1l and let me know if you think its excess glue on the joint and if so what would be the best way to remove it? I though sanding but was worried bout sanding through the veneer....or at world touch it up with matching paint color....thanks again for your time

Wow, thats a bit of glue you got happening there...

One of the best tricks I have seen comes courtesy of the Gavmiester.
Gav uses a small brass wire brush to gently scuff the area so as to give it some tooth.
You can get these brushes from the big green shed for a few dollars.

I though it was glue...it came like that....so do I brush go with the grain or with the maple flame....ive got those brushes......so im not actually sanding it off just creating grooves for the dye to sit in....im also trying to be cautious about going through or ripping up the veneer

Go with the grain.
I will call Gav and ask him to tell you exactly how he deals with this problem :)

WhiteRabbitz thats a nasty amount of glue. I'd carefully try and wirebrush it and try and remove some of it.

Gavmeister whats that liquid I bought you recommended about 12 or more months ago that allowed stain to take over the glue ?

I used it on a spalted cap with glue and it sort of worked. I got it in the workshop can check tonight

Ive also found that depending on the amount of glue in a small area to use steel wool, usually o or oo and does get a bit off without having to get rough and is easy to control in a small area.( have also used old fashioned kitchen scourer wool as well if doestn come away)

worth a try Tony good tip mate.

The main thing WR is be very careful these caps are only about 0.6mm thick so it might take a few goes to get the stain to soak in these areas.

no worries WR, I found the wire brushes the most effective. You have to be patient so it may take a few goes but worth not sanding/brushing through the cap. The factory is very inconsistent with glue so its a lucky dip. I've had some glue free caps and some have had as much as your kit.

good advice here, but if you have no luck, you could do a central racing stripe...

So how do we all think it looks now....

steps I took were
1-rub with steel wool from supermarket
2-rough up with wire brush
3-test with dye
4-repeat steps until dye takes to wood, I new I was getting close as I could see the tiger stripes starting to join
5-slightly sanded back til smooth being carful not to go through the veneer

sanding to get rid of them is definitely wrong and steelwool works awsome....
im sure it would save alot of beginners from sanding through

bwhahaha that naughty room cupboard is gonna be a bit cramped now hahahha
