Finally got to take a good look at the kit today. Amanda wants rainbows and unicorns. But don't panic. I have some ideas that will keep it rock and roll.

Too funny! Been there with those discussions on rainbows, unicorns and the colour pink.. I managed to keep things a bit more rock and roll by suggesting 'surfer girl' type blues/greens..
Hey man there's nothing wrong with the colour pink :p
I'm not against pink at all. If I can pull off the design I have in mind it will be very cool. So very soon there will be lots of questions on how to get artwork down on the wood.
rainbow unicorn strat - do it!
Tell you what, if we had a pink guitar in our house it would be camouflaged in the pink bedrooms, never to be seen again!
If the rainbows and unicorns don't work out there's always "Hello Kitty"! :D
I'm hoping to merge these pics and use the unicorns horn as the White light.
nice to meet you today Shoota, we did a mock build at my workshop and drilled the pickguard holes and 2 of the bridge holes to make sure it all fits together nicely and it does, so Shoota can happily start sanding the body and neck soon !
Hi Shooter, here's some ideas for you maybe inspiration lol
http://www.skinyourskunk.com If you don't like idea of skin get Jarrod to airbrush a design for you.
The great thing about the skins my buddy used one for his son . When his tastes changed he just took it off .
(No he didn't have the unicorn and rainbows lol.)
Yes. Thanks heaps Wokka. I will aim for February GOTM
My friend and I are heading to the paddo for 5:30 to watch The Fit Swimmers. If anyone is in the area stop in and meet me. My number is 0408 362 673
no worries Shoota, don't rush the build just for the sake of entering GOTM February, solid paint and your graphics may take longer than you think.
Enjoy the show at the Paddo tonight
Ok, have shaped the headstock. It's a 50's Strat template but it's not perfect. And was never going to be, possibly as its a 3/4 size. But I think it looks good. One more deep tool mark to get out.
HAHA!!! I once stripped down an old Washburn and repainted it like the Partridge Family bus...for those who remember that. :D

The bus was the only good part of that show.
I can't even watch it now. It's such a joke.
I might paint up another Partridge family guitar again. On the the Washburn I even had the Partridge painted on complete with cracked egg.
I tell you one thing I've learned in the day or two I've been here. Take pics of everything. I just never bothered before.
And Scott, I had a thing for Shirley Jones too. It must be the Mrs. Robinson thing. ;)
2 coats of primer down. 5 to go. Well 3 then a sand. Then another 2. Then a sand. Then some colour.
Whoa, there's a lot of prep work going on with this little mite.
But as they say, it's all in the prep.
We should see a perfect finish as a result . . .
Shoota, what do you use for primer? It really looks good.
Just a spray can of acrylic primer. Ive done 5 coats. It got a bit windy yesterday and blew the body off the hook. No wood damage. Just paint work. I'm off to get 1200 grit paper now and a couple of hot dogs. I'll rub it back and give it another 2 coats. Then a rub down and I hope it will be ready for some colour.
Thanks Shoota!
This is my first build Rob so I wouldn't necessarily follow my lead.
6th coat of primer. Tomorrow I'll get another can. Lay on a generous coat to fill a few tiny imperfections. Then a light sand and it should be good to go. Amanda has approved my design ideas. It's gonna rock.
getting there Shoota, look forward to seeing colour coats !
post designs? :P
This will give you an idea. The skull will be in the space behind the bridge. Same colours and will continue the pattern through to the back. Pink top and bottom with black through the centre. On the back the black will continue onto the neck and headstock. Then pink splash perhaps and Amanda in pink. Hopefully in Fender Font.
Unicorns and pink, jeez don't tell my little one, she's pink unicorn mad:-)
Looks like you've got a definite plan for the final concept there Shoota, should look insane if you can pull it off.
Just a little food for thought, I notice you're going pretty heavy with the primer, obviously you're after that perfect smooth finish which is great. Maybe an option in the future could be to grain fill the timber before painting, that way you'll only need one coat of primer, you'll cut your curing times right down and obviously have less paint on the body so the natural resonance of the timber won't be as stifled.
There's heaps of options as far as grain filler goes but a good inexpensive way is just with super glue, spread it all over, let it cure completely then sand back for an ultra smooth finish.
At our level of playing and my level of building I don't think it will make all that much difference. Once I've finished this one I'll order my next kit and so on.
Struggling to find a hot pink acrylic spray can.
Hi Shoota, Some paint shops that specialise in car paints can sometimes mix custom cans based on their sample catologues.
Yeah I was at APC today but he doesn't have anything close and can't mix something. It's not worth his time doing one pressure pack.
I have the pink, the White, the black, the White primer and the clear. Now just need the wind to stop.
First coat of colour.
Damn! you don't get much pinker than that! ... reminds me of "musk sticks"! ... (mmm, musk sticks! :D)
That pink guitar is looking cool so far, can't wait to see what it looks like finished.
It's turned more red than pink. I'm going to take it right back down to wood. Prime it in white and start over.
First of three coats. Unfortunately it's loses its vibrancy with every coat. And hard to get even. It's not perfect but every time I trying fixing something it Messes something else up.
