Well the day had come when my first ever bass kit arrived, I was so excited (and that takes a lot).

Everything was there.
First thing to do was the neck and shape the head stock.

Routed for a 2nd pickup?
well spotted Weirdy, looks like it came out of the box with the 2nd bucker route so must have been a job for DB !

I like the neck sound and my current Bass has the same set up and I run a Ampeg Fridge 8x10 so it should pump.
DB did the routing...
so Poita you going to cut the plate for the 2nd bucker or use pup rings for this build ?
Cool, I suspected it was DB's handiwork but thought I had better check it wasn't a factory oops. My next question was going to be about the pickguard needing an extra hole or if you were going bare.
I'm cutting it myself will have pictures soon it's black pearl and the body is Metallic Purple and the neck is clear and the hardware will be chrome but I'm going to replace that with gold a bit late. Need to save up a bit. Also it will have a three way switch for the pickups.

If the pickup routes are nice and clean you could probably get away with neither pickguard or pickup rings (which I don't think they make of MM style 'buckers.Quote:

My back is fine. I've used this rig for 20years and tried a lot of different bass rigs and none of them come close. When I play I never have to worry about my sound it's just rock solid. So a bit of exercise to bump in and out is worth it.
I guess it'll depend on your colour coat, how much you have to rout out, and your personal preference. I prefer to make alterations/adjustments as early in the process as I can, that way I have more options if something goes wrong. And, if something does go awry, it's probably going to be a lot easier to fix a colour coat than a clear coat over colour (depending on what you used). Something like a low tack masking tape may be enough to protect the colour perhaps? I've also found cork-backed placemats can be useful to protect a surface while routing. Maybe you could just pare out the rout a bit with a sharp chisel rather than having to use a router again? But, if you have a fragile/complicated colour coat and you're confident about routing once the hard clear is on then that may be the better option.
Thanks for the advice WeirdBits. The paint is fragile so I think I'll wait until the clear is hard. I don't have a problem with routing.
I need some help with paint finish. I've notice there are some cracks in the clear coat around the machine head holes (see image) I’ve got no idea how this happen I notice this after I wet sanded and polish and now it looks like it’s flaking a bit. Should I re gloss the head stock again?Attachment 656
Wet sanding seep perhaps? What clear are you using, how was it applied, how many coats, and how was the surface prepared before and between coats?
The clear was Motospray Acrylic Top Coat Clear, Spray Can, I did two coats waited a day, then put on the head stock decal, Wait another day then put six more coats on and let it dry for two an a haft weeks.
Suface was prepared with 240grit, 400grit, 800grit, 1500 and 2000.
Do you think I should sand back the head stock and re gloss.
Yeah it looks like you got water down the holes when wet sanding, wood swells and cracks the finish. Pain in the...... Put the tuners on, if the washer covers the cracks you're ok, if not it'll need to be sanded out and refinished. Alternatively, if you want to know you've done the whole guitar the best you can, just sand it back now and re clear. Be careful around holes that have unfinished surfaces like ur tuners, pot holes, bridge post holes etc. It sucks getting the whole guitar to wet sand stage to shaft it by some stray water.
You could also spray the clear into the holes, should help a bit as well.
If you put "super glue into/ onto the cracks, wait a hr or 2 then you can scrape gently with a safety razor blade to level it , then sand with 2ooo grit n a little polish.. that will both fix the damaged bit and blend in without being noticeable.

Yup definately caused from wet sanding. For future reference I always put clear coat on a cotton bud and seal all bare wood in holes . Aj has probaly suggested the best fix here otherwise its a re spray.
Go the CA glue.
I have done repair jobs on paint work using CA and no one has ever been able to spot the repair afterwards
I’ve finial finished my bass. I’m very happy how it turn out for a first build plus it sounds awesome especially through my Ampeg. I’ve already order my next build which is the IB5.

wow Peter that is stunning, very well done. There's still time to enter into February GOTM, would love to see more pics of this beast and tell us about all the hardware upgrades.
You will love the IB5 kit, are you planning a stain or solid paint for it ? Would be a shame to hide the nice ash grain
