AJs LP1-A

this is going to be a slowish build as I'm not firing on all cylinders just yet.. (Recovered from surgery ok, but I think that bloody one of the forum members that lives close by sent me a version of that man flu... :( .. )

SO I finally got around to checking out the LP from the sale weekend, it has some faults from manufacture but nothing that cant be dealt with easily and quickly.

Hey AJ, welcome back to the forum mate, awesome that you have made a start and started a build diary. The faults don't look too bad. What stain plans you got for this ? How does the neck fit into the pocket nice and snug ?
Don't go too hard mate get that ticker running on at least 7 out of 8 cylinders first :)

Would be good if we could get a pic of the top, love these ash LP kits, I just missed out on one of these :(

Well, this going to my experiment into the candy color range.. am thinking bronzy/copper with a wine red outer and a golden highlight. So far I have now put down a base coat of color ink that should accentuate the chosen colors.

forgot to mention, the obligatory sanding mantra was carried out on the body.. maybe just a little to amorous near the bottom edge of the cap...GOD DAMMIT! but that will be cunningly disguised during the last stages of finishing.
this has some really nice grain in it, so I will try to keep it the highlight

wow AJ that burst looks stunning, almost was reaching for the sunglasses. Yes a red wine outer would look sensational. Hope you didn't sand through much of the cap, my biggest fear !

Neck fit is tighter n a fishes.. well u get the idea, sorta water tight, so it will make it easier to take out the tooling gouges in the neck pocket without too much drama.
The grain is rather nice also :)

well looks like you got a winner kit then AJ well done mate, must be good to be building again and should speed up the recovery process !
Hit the edges with a cherry red AJ and you won't even know you sanded through the cap, doesn't look very obvious now

A tip for anyone that does sand through the cap in spots, is to sand it a tad deeper in that spot then back fill with a little timber mate . That way it will be less obvious when the color is put on.

I used a cedar/cypress red with a touch of pine blend matey.

I was just thinking, when I saw you had sanded through the cap, WHERE????? That Timbermate trick is not etched into memory! Good move AJ! And awfully glad to hear you are back on your feet mate!

thank you all for the great comments, it will be a slowish build in between lots of rests and the doc's visits. I just hope this goes as per my perceived vision for it.

Welcome back - hopefully sanding and staining a guitar could go down as "light exercise".

Looking good AJ. Very interested to see how the candy goes.

Have done a little more to the new Ash LP, with the candy coats. They are a little rough atm, but will sand back to get the imperfections then re-coat with the candy colors then clear coat to finish up. The clear coat will "pop" the candies. the center color is a copper shade with the burst outer a mauve red.

That cap looks beautiful with such a subtle burst into what you are calling mauve.
Nice warm colour combination sez me. Keen to see more progress . . .

Beautiful colour mate. It looks like the purple that sits in the middle of a sunset. So nice!

That burst!!! I don't think they get too much better than this and the colour choice is perfect.

ty guys, had a heavy handed "GLOOT" on the back.. so had to redo the back.. Dam the impatience..Just have to wait for the weather to get back to the normal spring niceness to carry on a bit further.. Update pictures to come next week-ish when I have done some more.

oh well AJ the back come up nicely. We had over 36 degrees here in Perth yesterday so maybe warmer weather is on its way east !

hehehe...I'm black belt 3rd dan in that mate!

Have had to repair the pergola flooring from where it got water damage (from a while ago..), so that put the build on the back-burner for a few days. At least I earned some brownie points from the missus.

Finally got a little bit more done to the body, 2 mist coats and 1 normal coat of clear done now, maybe need to do 1 more clear normal then a special blend coat to reduce the amount of cutting n polishing.
Tomorrow, the gods willing, will be going to have a peek at the woodworking show at Jeff's Shed in Melbourne. Wifey is also going as I needs someone to carry the goods back to the velocipeed.

ty Guys, Went to the show today. Wasn't that many displays there as it seems the greedy center want around $20,000 per stall.(That is what an old-timer from one of the wood turning displays told us, his group is a volunteer org that gives away whistles to kid also runs interactive lessons for kids.. they have to pay a $200 fee. It was once free for them)
So much wood... some really scrumptious black heart sassafras.. Laural Camphor.. ebony .. red gum..etc.. Dam pity I'm a pensioner and don't have the sort funds to be in a lolly shop like this! Any-hows, got some sample packs of veneer, will post some pictures later.

good stuff AJ, sounds like the same supplier the Tasmanian Huon pine factory had the best stuff by a mile at the Perth show.

Want to know a way to create your own spalting? you just add a bit of plain yoghurt to the surface of the wood, then leave it for a day or so then wipe off. that then creates a spalted finish.The bloke from Queensland woods told me that today..might give it a go out of being a nosey type of fella ..lol

Body now finished, wet sanded with 600, 1200, 2000 then 3000 grades. took all of around 15 mins then cut n polished. Next step is the neck, still pondering using a veneer ... not sure as the head has a hint of spalding and grain.
