Finally! Ordered this years ago as a birthday present to me from my wife, and today is the day. Promised myself I'd stain the Tele and oil the strat before starting this today, and guess what! They're both hanging!
Plans are a little sketchy for now. I have a rough idea for a finish but I want to upgrade the pups without breaking the bank. Any 7 string pups priced reasonably that'll get me into architects, northlane, hacktivist territory?

good stuff Andrew, u have early stages of GAS mate, this your 4th build ?
looks like a nice kit, there's been pup talk in other build diaries or maybe in the pickup section. Just make sure the upgraded pups fit before you start the finish. Best to do any cavity mods before the finish or even sanding starts
-
Whats your budget?? Artist guitars has duncan sentient/pegasus/nazguls for 128 each including free shipping, so thats pretty decent and will get you in a nice chunky heavy territory. Alternatively, for a similar price and a long wait, guitar parts resource has AHB-1 seven string sets but theyre active so if you dont like actives, then its probably a bad idea.
-
5th mate and 6th was ordered a while back as a custom order. Just checked out the guitarheads hex7 and the dimensions fit in with the stock pups. Seems like a good metal pickup with lots of high mid clarity and low mid scoop. Not too many vid reviews unfortunately but for $60 a set they'll do nicely. Don't want to spend a fortune on the pups for this one as I'd like to splurge a bit on the baritone 7 and get either some knuckles or dimarzios.
-
Woud like to stay away from actives. I've got an 81/85 set in an ec1000 that sound good, but very flat and one dimensional compared to passives imho.
-
Guitarheads hexbucker is pretty much a higher output stock pickup. IMO, the stock pitbull pups with a boost and a eq'd midscoop would sound the same and won't cost you anything.
-
Looking at the dimarzio blaze custom. They seem alright.
-
Dude was selling a set of blaze customs on eBay. Both neck and bridge shipped for $90. Stoked.
-
-
Abasi from Animals as Leaders and Vai used blaze customs so if you check out some of their older stuff you can hear the sound you can get from them. For $90 including shipping thats a bargain!
-
Yeah man I'm pretty stoked. They don't get real djenty which is good. I want a bit of chunk but don't want it to be really tinny. Thinking an aftermath for the other 7 though.

nice work Andrew, what sort of paint is this, acrylic in your air gun ?
-
good to see you use you washing line to dry your axes as well, good technique bro
-
blaaaaaaaccckkkkkkkkkkkkk
-
Wokks it's debeers series 500 acrylic black out of an air gun. As for the clothes line, isn't it the universal home job luthiers drying rack of choice? Maybe sm should start stocking hills hoists.
-
so thats one coat hey Andrew, is it gloss or satin ? come up nice.
yer for sure Stewmac would probably charge $500 for the clothesline and $1000 postage hahah.
Don't make a habit of leaving a body to cure in hot sun though, it can make the timber warp and do funny things to the finish
-
Very true haha. It's 2 coats. Nah mate it's painted in the shed but no light in there so stuck it up to snap a quick photo then back in the shade.
-
-
On a quiet note I just went 500 posts. Adam, please change my status to chatty noob. I'm in no way a mentor just yet haha.
-
cool nice bagging technique, is that done in silver ? Headstock looks great too
-
Cool! Looking rad already.
-
Diig. What colour are you candying it?
-
Thanks gents. It's a very coarse silver metallic. This is with the candy red. Comes premixed in a small bottle. I did the whole Tele and had left over so pretty decent value. Got it from eBay at a paint shop in sa.

Just to clarify, the Tele is the burnt orange (borange?) colour and this is the red. 3 coats, not very wet out the gun and 75% overlap with strokes. Not a line in sight, very pleased. Unfortunately I got called into work tomorrow so no chance to clear her up. Pups should get here tomorrow, got the push pull pot to tap them already, so hopefully I'll have it done next days off.
-
looks awesome Andrew with the red over the silver. Slow down bro you don't have to finish the build in 2 or less weeks you got plenty of other axes to play !
-
True mate. This one's an easy one to get done while the other tru oil ones get a quick wipe and just hang there doing not a lot for the next few weeks.
-
yer fair enough, got to let that tru oil cure
-
Well done Andrew, looking great.
-
Sensational Andrew well done bro.
-
Thanks guysbbvery excited with this build. I've always wanted a 7 string since forever but never 'needed' one with the band's I was in. First guitar with a Floyd as well.
-
look forward to seeing how this turns out Andrew, sure it will be a beast of an axe
-
-
so whats next Andrew u almost ready for clear coats ?
-
I wish mate. She is ready for a good clearing but I won't get a chance to even touch it till next Wednesday. Damn work. Need to do the burst first also. Then push pull pot to tap the dimarzio blaze custom 7s, upgraded Jack, custom truss rod cover and I'd say she'd he done.
-
yeah ok, know the feeling well when work gets in the way of a build. At least the paint should be fully cured for clear coats by then. Sounds like this beast will be screaming when its done
-
Yeah and I've still got the tl and st to oil up. Question for you mate, the pbg kits you build, do you sell them? Reason I ask, I've shown a few people up here the guitars I've done and I keep on getting asked how much to make them something like that. Might be a good little side earner for the entry to mid level guys.

If you don't want to put it out there on the interwebs my email is Andrew.s.walker1984@gmail.com.

Super quick update. Burst done, going to clean up the neck and do a wax paper transfer on the back of the neck then it's time to clear this sucker.
