This is my first build. Using water based ink from a direct to Garment printer, I start with black, then cyan, then more cyan.

Looking fantastic Dale! How deep are you going to go with the colour? I'm really digging the finishes people are achieving with inks. I'm going to have to give some a try!

Dale. Looks like you might have a glue spot on the top. It is taking some stain but not as much as rest of top. It looks bit like a cloud and is in bottom right corner of guitar in last photo.
Thanks Gav, it was a bit of a guessing thing, I just add the ink to some water, then wipe it on, then added more ink to make it bluer, I did about 5 coats. The guitar is actually nearly finished, I am just a bit slack in putting up pics!Quote:

I used decking oil to give it a satin finish.
Then glued the neck, that was a bit fiddly, I got my brother to help there.

Great colour on the body. Is that bottle of Aquadhere in the last image what you used to glue in the neck? If so, it may not be strong enough, particularly with an SG. Titebond is usually the preferred choice.
If you did use aquadhere you may want to keep an eye on the neck join when you start to add string tension, just in case.

I had a look at the cloud formation 'glue spot'. It's not a glue spot but a 'spot' where the wood was over polished (sanded) and hence would not take in as much stain. By resanding it you probably opened up the pores to absorb more paint!
I am with Scott on the Aquadhere. If you have a steam iron at home and a nice wet cloth I'd be steaming that neck off , removing the Aquadhere and regluing with Titebond. The Aquadhere IS going to let go at some point in the very near future, an no-one likes getting smacked in the face by a flying headstock during the middle of a solo!
Awesome colour . And as everyone else has said TITEBOND is the way to go..
SG's rock and this one will be no exception. The deep blue looks very cool.

Cheers guys on the glue thing. It's Aquadhere PVA wood glue. Is Titebond a brand of glue? I'll get down to bunnings and look for it. Do I steam the neck off from the back of the guitar?
Hey Dale, don't think Bunnings sell the titebond, yes thats the brand, get the red label like the picture. You might need to call around for a more specialised hardware.
As for steaming the neck off I've thankfully never had to do this. Presume you place a damp cloth and iron over the back, then turn the guitar over and let steam rise into the neck pocket with the fingerboard facing the steam so the steam soaks into the glued area

Masters or Carbatech supply the RED labelled "Óriginal" Titebond. You MUST use an Aliphatic glue. I think Gorilla also make an Aliphatic glue.
Get a cloth that is less thick than a towel but thicker than a dishcloth. Wet it well. Then liberate a steam iron that makes plenty of team from the house!
Apply the damp cloth over the joined area. Let rip with the steam iron. The glue will melt, but make sure you keep the cloth wet enough to keep steaming. Take care not to burn yourself in the process. Keep checking to see if the neck is prepared to separate from the body but don't force it excessively. Make sure you are doing all the joins where you glued. As soon as it gives way, remove the neck, and clean up the old glue. Important to get rid of it all.
You may need to rough up the neck pocket slightly and the section where the neck will glue before applying the titebond and resetting the neck. Clean up the excess glue with a fresh damp cloth!
Titebond should be dry in two hours unless the humidity is very high.

Cheers guys, there is a Masters near where I work, I'll pop in there tomorrow. Are we all certain this needs to be done?, I'm just concerned it may warp the timber?
Dale for peace of mind it's worth removing the neck and gluing with titebond.
I'd just take the steaming slowly and when the neck starts to move dry it off immediately with a dry cloth, and clean up the old glue ASAP. Sure this method has been used all the time when a set neck must be removed
the steam may harm the surface finish, so keep it well wrapped. Check my jazz guitar thread to see what can happen with steam

Hi guys, I got the neck off, and while it is off I thought I'd do something with the headstock, I also put a few coats of gloss clear on the body. It was marking too easily, so I'm hoping this will make it more scratch resistant.

nice one Dale that looks excellent, is this an SG-1 basswood model ? I see dot markers instead of trapezoid markers of the SG-1F.

Really nice blue finish and the ink seems to have really done the job. Really like the way the basswood grain shows through but still has that high gloss deep finish.

Yes Wokkaboy, it is an SG1 basswood model. Ha ha not sure it's worthy of a GOTM nomination. But I'm really happy with it, It's not perfect, but it's the best I could do, hopefully when I do another kit I can do a better job. Cheers vh2580, I was stoked with the wood grains and colour!
