So here are a few pics of the body. Pic one is the chips out of the bottom, 2 is the filler to the right of the heel and 3 is the grain with a damp cloth run over it.

Hey Andrew, I think this is an alder tele, what is the exact model on the invoice ?
TLA-1 is ash and TL-1A is alder from memory.
I got both an ash and an alder tele in the sale. My alder tele cutaway is covered in glue
TL-1A. My bad haha.
I'd still stain it Andrew, the grain isn't that apparent but should still look good.
This is my alder tele I entered a few GOTM's ago

I'm shooting for this. Basically you butane torch the wood, wire brush it off and clear. Do u think it'd work with alder?
Oops, forgot the photo.

I've never heard of that technique Andrew so no idea, suppose you could try the technique in an area covered by the pickguard and see how it goes.
Where's that photo from Andrew, that ash strat looks hot as !
Just Google images mate. Try a search for sugiban guitar or scorched guitar or other derivatives. They traditionally use Cedar but it looks like the ash grain and cedar are a tiny bit similar.
Been researching staining on alder today and it seems to be a temperamental beast. From what I've gathered the trick is to sand the body as normal, sand the sides as far as 600 to inhibit the uptake of the stain and also use a compatible sanding sealer to help eliminate the blotchiness. In my case it'd be timbermate, fw sanding sealer, fw prooftint, naughty oil. Sound ok?
yer sounds like a good plan Andrew.
See you in the naughty room for a welcoming pint and pizza !
Not sure on what stain you are looking to apply but I've just applied a Wudtone finish on alder telecaster body. I sanded body and sides to 320. No problem with blotchiness in my case. The alder was VERY thirsty, 3 applications of Wudtone (butterscotch) was all that was required and achieved nice even colour. The body before this was the same apart from application of Timbermate grain filler, the Wudtone did not apply as well. For another experiment I used 240 grit sanding on alder body, Timbermate and a mix of feastwatson golden teak / liming stain. Came up a treat, similar to the TV yellow found on the old on LP Junior guitars.
Thanks lads.
Woks I probably should have been in there long ago using 2k paints
Andrew, I'll be using Japan black and a lighter Amber colour, all prooftint. I heard the end grain just acts like a sponge and goes real dark real quick.
Hi Andrew,
Wow that Strat looks awesome! There's a guy called SOG Guitars on Facebook who regularly does this scorching on pine bodies. He might be a good source of information if you have any questions.
cheers,
Gav.
Thanks gav. I saw his name pop up during the sale and checked his work out and its pretty much exactly what I'm after. Even fender did a limited run a few years back with ash bodied strats.
A few pics. Did a super fast mock build. A few glue and filler spots and some holes and stuff that I'll have to fix up before stain. What's the best course of action to remove the bulk of the filler? The holes will be timbermated and the glue spots will be sanded and wire brushed.

Andrew I'd wire brush the filler and try get as much grain filler in as possible
Will do. Going to mackay on Wednesday to stock up on supplies for these two.
So the Tele got some love today. Candycaster is done, the schpalty lp is done and the firecaster is spending time in the naughty corner covered in naughty oil. Tomorrow I get to unwrap the 7 string so today was Tele appreciation day.
The plan for this unit is to keep it it nice and classy looking, but beefcake underneath. Not metal beefcake but more than the lp. So.
Fw black too, faux natural binding, fw golden oak back and sides, tru oil that sucker. Gfs lil puncher modern vintage buckers in neck and bridge, coil tapped, drop caps, vintage cloth wire, shielded, pearl white guard and white switch button, string through 6 saddle bridge.
For the neck, natural tru oil back and head stock, dingo.wax fretboard, wax transfer logo on the stock and a ornate W behind the hesdstock/ neck join bit.
All the parts are ordered, just waiting on arrival but today I got the body sanded and stained. Here she is. Not sure what to jam her yet.

What started as a bit of an uninspiring piece of wood is coming together trumps. Really happy with how it's turning out. Will cut out the head stock tomorrow and oil her up but here she is with a really brief mock build. Just waiting on a new Jack and switch and the puzzle is complete.

Hey man are those GFS pickups? I've got the Lil' somethingorother in my tele and it's sweet.
Yeah they are vintage modern lil punchers.
looking very nice Andrew, its come a long way from the early mock build pics. Good work !
You do know using GFS pups will get you more time in the naughty room !
Looking great Andrew. Love the black with the white scratchplate. Black Teles rule! Interested to hear how the GFS pickups sound...
Cheers,
Gav.
Probs shouldn't say it's a gfs bridge as well then...
Just ordered a db bone nut. I think the old nut was welded on. Still haven't got it out yet but it's pretty destroyed. Any hot tips on how to remove a troublesome nut?
And I thought I'd put this up. Love seeing everyone's multiple build photos and here is mine.

How is your workbench that clean?
Pretty sure I lost one of the kids in mine there is that much crap on it.
Mate that's just the kitchen table. Don't even have a work bench. All I have is a tiny saw horse that comes up to my knees haha.
nice work, love the neck logo. take care on the kitchen bench, or there will be trouble!
Yeah the kitchen bench is just to store them over night. We never use it anyway. My wife and I both work at the same restaurant, I'm head chef and she's front of house manager so we eat at work most nights.
