Wow some nice grain in that bro
Great figure on that! What are you planning finish-wise?
Honestly, I don't know now. In was going to pop the grain, then red candy and clear. For the Tele I was going to do a Japanese thing called yakisugi but it has next to no grain so I don't know now!
Don't really want to do another candy Tele. Wanted this to be a bit more modern looking and sound vintage while the Tele would have stacked buckers, reshaped neck and body contours and a tru oil finish. Now, I don't know.
won't matter what colour you stain this Andrew it will look good !!
I got one of these to build as well
nice looking grain Andrew, so was there much glue on the bottom and cutways ?
On this one no but the Tele there is a fair bit. If you get a sec, can you take a look at the Tele thread and let me know if you think the grain will pop at all. Seems like it's pretty plain but I don't have anywhere near your experience with these things.
strat looks great, a nice place to start from
Just got home from work and mock build time. Ten points to whoever can tell me what's up with the nut.

Is the nut the wrong way around? Slots look wider on the bottom strings!
10 points to Mr wokka. I'm loving the grain on the side that wraps up to the bridge. Nice tree.
yer the grain on these ash kits are always good Andrew
Yeah mate. I messaged the fella gav told me about and he offered a wealth of tips! Can't use any fillers as suspected so I think it'll be bbq the wood, sanding sealer x100000, carefully sand back to not burn through the sealer and touch the wood, possibly a real light amberish stain, naughty oil, 0000 steel wool to matte it down a bit and profit. Hopefully. Realistically I'll probably set the body on fire and cry haha.
On the plus side ash burns pretty hot so it'll make some good fire wood ;)
BBQcaster?
haha reminds me of this video

If I fudge it claim it as an inspired by Monterey.
Guys what do you think is the best way to go for the head stock logo. I've got a stencil for the logo that I plan to shoot with white acrylic paint. Where in the scheme of things should I do this. Basically the finish will be clear sanding sealer and tru oil. Cheers.
Just thought I'd throw this up. From left to right is the finish test run, left with just tru oil going in varying shades of fw stain. All patches have Just the one coat of to.
Also, anyone know if it's ok to put the acrylic sprayed k go on or under to?

Hey Andrew, I have had bad experiences spraying lacquer over TO. In general I would have to say it's a bad, bad idea. On my scratchy project for instance the TO really brings out the grain initially, but the lacquer I sprayed over it didn't stick properly to the surface of the wood. Any little bump, screw or whatever is enough to cause a bubble under the lacquer. The TO gives it nothing to grab on to. Got a ruined project to teach me that little lesson! :)
cheers,
Gav.
What about sanding sealer, acrylic logo, another coat of sealer just over the logo then to? That way the acrylic is completely isolated from the oil.
Will probably be fine if it's just a small patch.
cheers,
Gav.
Sanded back with wax and grease remover. Looks so good I just wanna clear her! Did a few more test runs on pine, but now it's show time.

Took it off in time to do the front though haha
Andrew how did you get that effect of the dark grain ? did you stain it black and rub it back or use some burning technique you talked about ? looks awesome and glad you removed the nail polish haha

Interesting technique BTW Andrew, keen to see how this works out.
Cheers guys. Wokka yeah it's the burning technique. I used a propane turch, keeping about a hand span away and angling the flame the direction as to push the burn forward. Kind of like welding.
Wow, this is going to be a great effect.
awesome Andrew, no wonder you were worried about doing a Jimi at Monterey.
I'll check out youtube for some 'how to' vids, that's got to be easier than staining it black and MORE sanding !
Maybe! I've got the sanding sealer drying now then that has to be sanded flat without burning through. So yeah, less sanding but more careful sanding.
yer ok Andrew look forward to seeing pics after you sanded the sealer off. Looks like couple of areas you burnt the timber a little too much, the round dark areas ?
Yeah mate on the back there was a couple down the bottom. Blended them in now though. Well, earlier before I put the sealer on. Check out sog guitars on Facebook. He does it a lot on pine and those darker spots when cleared over almost become a feature in their own right.

looks very cool Andrew, we still haven't seen a pic of the front ?
So are you just clearing the body from here ?
Oh Crap I thought I did one. Here it is. From here I'll stain it, then tru oil.
