here she is! courtesy of a microscopic chip in the veneer i was able to more or less steal this of adam.
plans are to leave her stock apart from the wiring, using the cloth gear.
finish will probably be japan brown back, sides, neck and back of headstock. top will be ebony timbermate into the mahogany canyons and on the spalty back, sanded back to pop the grain, japan black, sanded back again ever so lightly, then an airbrushed black burst, 2k clear to finish,

kit looks great apart from that small chip in the veneer, a chip out of the heel join on the body and a few tiny glue spots. otherwise she is pristine.....
apart from the neck fitting. i'll try get a decent photo and post it later on. not too concerned til i break out the measuring tape and see if the scale is in spec

looks great Andrew, sure it can be rescued. Its basically a half price kit so you can't go wrong. If you match the colour of the cap those cracks/openings can be filled and you saying the chip at the bottom will be covered with a black burst. Lovely spalted cap, should look awesome
-
Very jealous!
If only I'd seen this bargain just a little sooner... :P

patchy head stock after sanding. i hit it again with some thinned black and will sand it back later on

It's taken 2 nights sanding to get to this. I'm a chef, do 12.hour days so when I get home at 10 it's hard to get any sanding done without the neighbours throwing shit at me. I've nearly perfected the art of silent sanding. Still want you can to come back a touch but the effect is there.

Looking Good Andrew. Interested to see how that cap will come up when finished.
-
Thanks mate, me too haha. First time staining anything ever. Another thin coat of brown Japan on the back.

you're doing fine mate, take your time.
Don't put too much stain or sealers etc on the neck pocket, or on the neck where it joins onto the guitar. It can effect the take up and adherence of the glue - raw timber is best.
Ah, I see it's a bolt on, no biggie then, but leave it thin, as you have it now is fine. Remember especially for set necks (glue in) though.
Nice job, it's going to look great
-
Thanks Stan. Yeah she is a bolt on so the stain on the heel should be sweet. Will be careful when spraying clears not to get too much down the bottom. Hopefully on Wednesday or Thursday I can get the burst on then clear it. I'm happy with the stain on the back, sides and neck, just need to tweak the top a tad more to get more natural wood showing. Nearly there.
-
-
Here is the body with a damp cloth over it. Pretty happy with the outcome. The head stock didn't take stain on the front well and came out a bit patchy so now it's just undiluted black which turned out cool anyway. Neck is done, final ultra diluted black going on the back and sides now then I'll let her dry up, steel wool it in a few days and go from there.

Looks great, this is going well

coming along nicely Andrew. Are you hand sanding or using an orbital after 10pm ? I can understand not being popular with neighbors if you're using an orbital sander
-
Nah mate hand sanding with 400. Going super slow, more of a massage than sanding haha. That is until one of the millions of diesel mine trucks come past so I can give it a furious rub for about 15 seconds before returning to stealth mode.
-
I wouldn't think hand sanding would be loud enough to upset a neighbor, just put a TV or radio on and you will barely hear the sanding
-
Unfortunately I live in a mining town where most people work shift work so there is always someone just waking up or going to bed at weird hours. Noise complaints for the smallest things are the norm up here.
-
A noise complaint over hand sanding? That's a new one. Hope you don't need to sneeze anytime!
-
Yeah I reckon. Haven't got a noise complaint for the sanding. Yet. But got a few weird looks from the neighbours when I used the spray guns. On a Wednesday. During the day. My tube amp isn't getting any love either which sucks but that's the nature of the town I guess.
-
Andrew that top looks so good man. Making me reconsider my colour on the IB...
-
Thanks dude. Don't do it! I'm hanging to see a trans purple ib7. It was purple wasn't it?
-
Yeah man. I was either going to go trans black or purple
-
For me I'd go purple with a solid black edge but that's just me. And I was thinking trans black for the baritone haha.
-
Well not exactly trans black, more charcoal with the quilt in a solid black and a sprayed black edge, back and sides.
-
Here is a question for you guys. The pickup rings are flat! Looking at a few other arches I have the rings are curved with the body shape. Question is when I push down on them over the body they bend enough to get the shape, but will the screws hold out?
The site won't let me upload photos off my mobile lately for some reason.
-
Are you using plastic or metal? I tried bending some metal ones and it bound the screws something fierce. I'd say plastic would be more forgiving, but it might be a better idea to get some curved bottoms. I think I've got a couple of spare sets in black if you want them.
-
Hey man. The set I'm using is the ones that came with the kit. I wonder if anyone else has built a lp and had the same issue? They are pretty thin plastic anyway and bend to shape easy enough. My only concern is the screws will eventually give out under the pressure. Anyone else had this issue?
-
Or just sand an arch into the stock ones?
-
Hey Andrew, they have supplied you the wrong pickup surrounds, sure if you send an email to Adam he'll send you out the curved surrounds to suit the arch top of the LP.
Or you could get a file and file the rounded shape into the surrounds, the front surround is normally alot thinner than the rear, make sure there's enough meat on the neck surround to file a curve
-
I'm at work now, getting my wife to send a few photos of the top and the sides of the pups. If you reckon they can be filed I'll do that, otherwise ill email Adam. Reason being it was the seconds guitar, only $120 so don't won't to be too much of a pain.
-
Andrew they will be pretty easy to file a curve into to match the shape of the arch top. The surrounds supplied are probably off an SG or IC kit which are flat tops. I've had to go the other way had arched surrounds on a flat top and I've managed to file them flat enough
-
Here are the pups. I'll try file them down. Wish me luck haha.
As for pups themselves. How do they sound. I've got a set of epiphone lp pups from a mid 90's guitar. I swapped them out for a jb/59 combo 8 years ago so can't remember how the originals sound. Would the epis be better than stock? Kind of like the black covers though.
-
-
-
I'd put the epiphone pups in Andrew, they should sound better than the stock ones, although the stock ones still sound pretty good. Is there an issue using the epi pups with the stock surrounds ?
-
I have had the opposite problem. I've got a flat-top SG (non-PBG) with arched covers, and my MB (PBG) kit came with arched surrounds too. It's not that hard to sand the plastic down to flat, so I imagine (as Woks said) it wouldn't be hard to do an arch either. :)
-
Not too sure if the surrounds work with the epis. Ill check it tonight. In the mean time my phone will not let me upload photos.
