Shaped the headstock, gave everything a good sanding and applied a deep coat of Wudtone 'black magic woman'

...then sanded the top down a little and turned it green. Going for a burst look. But I might suddenly change my mind and take it back to black if that doesn't work out :P

Love the green definitely keep it. Looks damn sexy so far, nice work.
Sweeeeeet.
Love that green. With the clear over it that thing will be super deep. Nice work.
Agreed, that green is rather special. Loving the look of this one so far. :)
Looking good so far.
Aw, thanks guys :)
I'm working on the burst now; it is harder than I'd expected to get it all nice and even. I think It'll look cool when I'm done though.

looks great Bec and welcome good to have a female buider, I can only think of 2 others in the forum.
Keep that green will look amazing with a few clear coats.
Love the body hanging method, is that a bass string that goes to the control cavity ?
just saw the burst, looks great Bec. Try and steel wool the transition between coats will help the black and green blend better
Thanks Wokka. Yeah, that's pretty much what it is. I was trying to figure out the best way of hanging, tried clamps like a few people suggested, but I found them a bit awkward to paint around.. stared at it for a while and decided the easiest way was to grab some fairly heavy gauge wire i had lying around, tie it around a couple of washers and run it through the cavity. Worked pretty well I think :)

Yes! Was going to use sand paper, but I think you're right, I'll go with steel wool :)
nice hanging method Bec. Don't go near the cap with any sandpaper, these caps are very thin. Use super fine 0000 grade steel wool works well between coats.
I'm currently building one of these Sunday special kits. Looks like you didn't get any glue on the cap either !
Cool. Love the way this is turning out, Bec. That green is gorgeous and the BMW coat has popped the grain magnificently. Gonna be sweet!
Bec, that is a very slick build, nice work, this will come up a treat
Loving how she looks so far Bec! You popped the grain magnificently with the BMW and the green is just spectacular. Looks like you are well on the way to a gorgeous burst too. Great work!
Cheers,
Gav.
Almost happy with the burst..

actually looks pretty damn good, love the green too
I'd be happy with that. Looks great.
Good job. Looking great.
looks awesome Bec, I'd say you're ready for clear coats !
Okay, I'm going to try not to mess with it any more, calling it done. Clear coat time! :D

so whats the clear coat plan Bec, you using a wudtone top coat ?
Don't forget to steel wool or scrape the thin white binding edge you see from the top
I haven't fogotten - got my steel wool waiting :)
Yep, going with wudtone satin.
no worries Bec all good. Should come up a treat with 4 or 5 satin coats
Looks amazing Bec! Gonna be sweet with some clear on there.
cheers,
Gav.
Lovin' that vibrant green in contrast with the dark burst. looks slick!
That is a fantastic green you've achieved there, and the burst is very tasteful too.
This will come up a treat I reckon. :)
Thanks :)
Hey, do you guys clear coat the cavities as well?
If you're using pup rings with your humbuckers (which I'm guessing you are) clear coating the cavities is kind of just a waste as you'll never see it once you drop the pup in. Personal choice really but imo unnecessary.Quote:

Hey, do you guys clear coat the cavities as well?
Hm. Okay, thanks bargeloobs :)
[great name, by the way] :P
All cleaned up and ready for clear coat :)

Great job with the binding Bec! For my 2c, if you are using Wudtone clear coats you'll want to keep as much of it as you can for the body. Dont waste it in any of the cavities.
cheers,
Gav.
Bec - Great looking LP - love the depth you've got in the green! Best thing for the cavities is either copper shielding tape or some other conductive paint. That should help with reducing hum from outside RF noise.
Cut a thin line out of the headstock and filled it with the green dye. It's not -perfectly- straight, but there's no going back now! :P

Good point Gav, I feel like there's not a whole lot of topcoat in these kits, I should save it for the important bits :)
Thanks Brendan. I bought some shielding tape.. I guess it doesn't really matter whether or not I paint the cavities before shielding. Easy :)
well done Bec headstock looks cool and the body will look sweet with clear coats. Good move on copper shielding the cavities
some great work here Bec, details count, it's looking really good
Great work, looks killer. Just a note, if you shield the pickup cavities, it will slightly change the sound from your pups, youll get about 5% more midrange and 5% less highs due to increased capacitance between the pup induction and the surrounding shielding. If you dont want this, shielding the control cavity will remove hum without changing the tone (single coils may still hum). Also, if you go thin on the clear coats, youll probably find that theres plenty to go around. That tiny amount really does last.
