Hey guys. I got a Tele thinline kit a few years back as a gift so no idea if it came from pb or not. Nice guitar, plays good, sounds great but looks like a pig. I had no idea what I was doing. Had a metallic silver orange paint that I sanded before clearing which I didn't polish. Matte unmetallic orange shite.
So I'm using it as a test bed for techniques for the upcoming ib7. It'll be candy orange front and back, white painted binding and marble sides. Neck and I'll be clear, and the logo will be sprayed on.
So far I've had it timbermated, hung up and had the first coats of primer put on. Let it hang in there shed, came back and it fell of the hook onto the concrete. I wonder if pbhq heard the profanities from there.
Oh well, it's sanded all the dodgy bits out, only drama was chip near the f hole. No more.timber mate and the closest bungggg sorry db, to get more is in Mackay, a 5 hour round trip. Soooooooooo super glue it is.

if the kit was purchased more than 2 years ago doubt its a PBG kit. Plus it looks different to the thinline kit they offer, pickguard is a different shape and has a humbucker neck pup.
Anyway not good to have a hanging fail and it falls on concrete
post some pics and let us see how its looking now
-
Sounds like you are out Moranbah way Andrew. Theres two of us PBG builders in Mackay.
-
thats it Lozza and Tony are in Mackay so you can have a PBG get together north Qld !
-
Yeah buddy fnq party. Yeah I doubt it's a pbg kit hence in this forum.
@tony, yeah mate. We are in beautiful moranbah.
@wokka here are a few pics. It's primed with 2 mist coats of white. Its just the cheapo sca acrylic but it comes out prety nice.
Tomorrow will be sanding the white back, binding, then black the sides out, marble them, silver the top and back, and hopefully get some candy going.

So silly me thinking I can get a good job with a rattle can. Nope. This is just the first mist coat of the gun. Still acrylic but with a compressor instead of a can. Shite, no wonder the pros use this gear. I was lucky on a recent trip to mackay, shipping for a compressor. All suitable compressors for hvlp guns were way too expensive. Enter supercheap. They had a 60l compressor, a 1.7, and 1.4 gun, a .8 touch up gun and a pressure reg, hose andbfittings for $199. Giddy up!

1st black coat on sides looks good Andrew, I saw that kit at Supercheap advertised for $199, sounds like a good deal. Plenty of work to do but will keep you busy !
-
Marbling done, now to let it dry for a half hour and tape her up, silver th front and back, clean down and candy her up. Spraying with a compressor is so much quicker as well. Most of the paint is ending up on the guitar and not bouncing off like with the cans.

Here it is with the tape removed showing the white. Not sure if I should candy over it as well, or take it up and have the contrast of the white against the orange.

looks great Andrew, how you doing the marbling, put paint on a plastic bag and dab the sides ?
Hope thats not your foot with nail polish in the 2nd pic haha
I'd leave the binding white and see how it looks, can always go back later and colour it if you want
-
Haha nah mate not my foot. Or is it.....
With the marble I'm just spraying a small section about the width of my hand silver, pretty heavy coat, then I have a bout 6 shopping bags all inside another into a ball, then dab it while the paints wet. You can also use glad wrap. YouTube spray chief candy paint, there is a demo of the candy orange I'm using as well and how he marbles with glad wrap.
-
I'm thinking the same thing but the boss reckons candy it. Hmmm....
-
Wow. That's pretty cool. Never seen a finish like that on a guitar before. Kinda like it!
-
Thanks mate. The inspiration was this thing. I had this Tele already so using to get the hang of hvlp guns, marbling and spraying candy so any mistakes I make now I can eliminate when I do the ib7. Same deal with the spalted lp with the chip. My practice run for staining. Got a custom ib7 with a quilted top on the way.

very nice effort Andrew, looks a million bucks
-
Thanks mate.
So candy is sprayed, let it dry and removed the tape. I can't believe I did this! Probably not perfect by any stretch, but I'm a chef by trade and the closest I've come to painting and wood work is food colours and wooden spoons! Going back to work tomorrow so this guy will hang out for a few weeks til the lp is ready to clear and I'll do both these guys at the same time.
-
There were a few spots where the candy crept under the tape but the white has 3 coats so I'll just be super careful with some 0000 steel wool and clean it up next week.

Damn! Those sides are beautiful man.
Can you explain what candying is?
-
thanks man! i'll try, but bear in mind i'm no expert. candy is a very translucent clear coat with colour that when sprayed over a large flake, highly metallic base coat creates depth of colour, a wet look. remember those candy apples? the paint tries to replicate the same effect. when doing a candy it is important to lay a gaudy metallic down first, think those sparkle finishes that gretsch uses. with the candy over it, cleared and polished it will look like a deep colour, but under light you will be able to see the shimmer from the metallic just enough so it creates an interesting effect. here is the youtube link to the video of the guys from where i bought the paint from demoing it. they also explain it pretty well.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gz7OPfQ-Lfo
the paint is a spray chief product, acrylic based and comes ready mixed in a 250ml bottle which was more than enough to do the guitar, it was about $28 i think from memory. pretty sure the place is called vg auto paints, and they deliver.
that video i posted explains the marbling technique also. he uses glad wrap which makes the texture of the effect alot finer with alot of strightish lines where the one i opted for was a bunch of coles shopping bags all bunched inside another and tied off so it was a larger round surface.
next time i do it i will thin the metallic out a bit more than the recommended 1:1 as you only get about 5-10 seconds to do the marbling before it starts to flash of and get tacky.
also, with the candy as its such a light colour designed to be built up over a series of passes, i am inexperienced with the spray guns so when i was doing a spray pattern test i could only see a little colour so cranked the mixture knob up. the guitar turned out awesome, but knowing this now i can dial it back a bit, conserve the paint a bit more and have a bit more control over the amount of paint going onto the job knowing that with a few more passes i can still get the same result, less waste, and more control.
hope this helps
-
also, do a google image search for candy apple paint, or candy paint guitars. it'll come up with millions of hot rods and classic cars which is what this product is usually used for, but it will give you an idea of what the colours look like polished up, and also what base colours look like under candies. i used silver under orange candy, but lots of guys use gold under orange, or red. you get some great results doing metallic black under red or green as well. just think of the candy as your clear coat which has been tinted, and the base colour is what provides the depth and highlites. the combos are pretty much endless.
-
Yeah sweet man. Really dig it. Should look maaaaad on your IB7 too!
-
Fingers crossed! Turned out good on the trial but come show time things have a habit of giving me a headache. Fingers and toes crossed.
-
-
So cool man. Looks like that neck has some nice grain too
-
That looks so damn hot! Definitely giving me ideas for the future. ;)
I wish I had seen the deal for $199 spray gun, compressor and fittings. That is an insane bargain. The guns alone cost that much! Lucky as, mate.
-
Thanks lads. Yeah the gun kit that came with it was on the shelf seperately for $219. Deal of the century.
-
-
Mate you're a genius. Honestly, that thing is perfect. What did u use for the marbling?
-
And that's a scratch build? That's immaculate man. Where did you learn to do that?
-
Hey Andrew, love the candy finish on the tele looks great.
I've seen Jarrod's PRS and it is a hand built scratchy. He got the marbling effect putting paint on a plastic bag and dabbing it on the body. It looks even better in the flesh !
-
It's amazing hey. Would love to do a scratchy one day but no idea where to start!
-
Thanks guys, Andrew it comes from years of air brushing and well the build is actually my first scratch build by hand. Mate its all about taking your time and just getting things right. The wife says im an OCD perfectionist lol....this forum is a great place to pick up handy tips for many things. Just remember your efforts are creating something that will last a long time so whats the rush. I want an axe to look like a bought one so if it takes 2 to 3 months to achieve that then so be it.
-
Thanks mate. You know I'm a fan of your work. And that new one in the build is going to be incredible.

nice work Andrew, those small goosebumps on the body should disappear when it dries
-
Cheers guys. Hope so, it's getting wet sanded and polished up anyway so any orange peel should disappear
